About the Book

Nina Redmond is a literary matchmaker. Pairing a reader with that perfect book is her passion… and also her job. Or at least it was. Until yesterday, she was a librarian in the hectic city. But now the job she loved is no more.

Determined to make a new life for herself, Nina moves to a sleepy village many miles away. There she buys a van and transforms it into a bookmobile—a mobile bookshop that she drives from neighborhood to neighborhood, changing one life after another with the power of storytelling.

From helping her grumpy landlord deliver a lamb, to sharing picnics with a charming train conductor who serenades her with poetry, Nina discovers there’s plenty of adventure, magic, and soul in a place that’s beginning to feel like home… a place where she just might be able to write her own happy ending.

Book Summary

The mistletoe is out, and the gloves are off . . .

‘Tis the worst season to be single, but Kara Hastings won’t let a little Christmas funk spoil the festive season. Sure, running her own bakery is a little harder than she expected, but she can handle it. And she’ll prove it to a certain infuriatingly handsome, bossy Big City guy. She may be sugar and spice, but she can kick his butt twice.

Nate Griffin is in Briar Creek only for the holidays, and he refuses to fall for the whole “small town, candy cane-scented Christmas Wonderland” thing. He’s more interested in the fresh-faced cookie chef who always knows exactly how to get under his skin. So when Nate challenges Kara in the town’s big holiday contest, it’s not just the competition that starts to heat up. If he’s not careful, Kara won’t just melt his icy resolve against a small-town Christmas . . . she’ll melt his heart too.

12 Steps to Mr. Right Cover

Book Summary

12 steps to finding Mr. Right, composed by dating coach extraordinaire Savannah Gamble:
1: Admit to being powerless over your attraction to the wrong type of guy. (Like Lincoln Wells, who broke your heart after an unforgettable one-night stand.)
2: Believe Mr. Right is out there.
3: Take inventory of past mistakes. (See step #1.)
4: Make a list of qualities you want in a man. (Avoid charming baseball players/reason you made these rules in the first place)
5: Take charge of your own life.
6: Learn to love yourself.
7: Sort the hookup guys from the relationship guys. (Avoid a painful brushoff after an amazing night together.)
8: Never, ever settle. (Even if the chemistry is off-the-charts.)
9: Don’t believe you can change a guy. (Once a commitment-phobe, always a commitment-phobe)
10: Communicate your needs.
11: Open your heart & love fully. (Still working on this one…)
12: Don’t ever, ever stray from the steps.

American Assassin by Vince Flynn (Book Review + Movie News)

Hey guys.

I just wanted to take a few moments to talk about American Assassin. You can read my review of the book below, but I wanted to give you a little background on what led me to want to read this book. Because it might seem like it’s out of my normal reading range to you, but in truth, it’s really not.

You see, I have always loved military, political, and spy thrillers. I first found them when I was getting my bachelor’s in Criminal Justice and continued reading them all through college. Somewhere along the way though, I wound up reading a host of other genres, so much so that this particular genre fell a bit by the wayside for me. Until a few weeks ago, that is. When I heard they were making American Assassin into a movie and that it would star Dylan O’Brien (Deepwater Horizon, The Maze Runner, Stiles on Teen Wolf) as Mitch Rapp and Michael Keaton as  Stan Hurley, the man who trains Rapp. From there, a quick search lead me to discover that, though this book was written well after the series started, it is actually the first book in the series, the book that gives the background on Mitch Rapp and his training as an assassin. The summary of the book caught my eye pretty quick and before I knew it, I’d bought the trade paperback on Amazon. And I am very glad I did, too. Because I loved the book and I absolutely cannot wait to see the movie, which actually just started filming (or maybe just pre-production?) this month.

I will no doubt be posting more about this series as I work my way through the rest of the books (and possibly the movie as more comes out about it’s filming). If you’ve read this series, or you decide to read it now, please come back and comment. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it, and what you think about the casting choices. I could totally see Dylan O’Brien as Mitch Rapp after reading this book. I honestly can’t wait to see the intensity he’ll no doubt bring to the role.

Here’s some first look photos of Dylan as Mitch Rapp for those interested in reading more about the movie. You can find more details about the book (along with my review) and the rest of the series below-including how to pre-order the newest release in the series, book fifteen, Order To Kill.

Book Summary

#1 New York Times bestselling author Vince Flynn returns with yet another explosive thriller, introducing the young Mitch Rapp, as he takes on his first assignment.

Before he was considered a CIA superagent, before he was thought of as a terrorist’s worst nightmare, and before he was both loathed and admired by the politicians on Capitol Hill, Mitch Rapp was a gifted college athlete without a care in the world . . . and then tragedy struck.

Two decades of cutthroat, partisan politics has left the CIA and the country in an increasingly vulnerable position. Cold War veteran and CIA Operations Director Thomas Stansfield knows he must prepare his people for the next war. The rise of Islamic terrorism is coming, and it needs to be met abroad before it reaches America’s shores. Stansfield directs his protégée, Irene Kennedy, and his old Cold War colleague, Stan Hurley, to form a new group of clandestine operatives who will work outside the normal chain of command—men who do not exist.

What type of man is willing to kill for his country without putting on a uniform? Kennedy finds him in the wake of the Pan Am Lockerbie terrorist attack. Two-hundred and seventy souls perished that cold December night, and thousands of family and friends were left searching for comfort. Mitch Rapp was one of them, but he was not interested in comfort. He wanted retribution.

Six months of intense training has prepared him to bring the war to the enemy’s doorstep, and he does so with brutal efficiency. Rapp starts in Istanbul, where he assassinates the Turkish arms dealer who sold the explosives used in the Pan Am attack. Rapp then moves onto Hamburg with his team and across Europe, leaving a trail of bodies. All roads lead to Beirut, though, and what Rapp doesn’t know is that the enemy is aware of his existence and has prepared a trap. The hunter is about to become the hunted, and Rapp will need every ounce of skill and cunning if he is to survive the war-ravaged city and its various terrorist factions.

As action-packed, fast-paced, and brutally realistic as it gets, Flynn’s latest page-turner shows readers how it all began. Behind the steely gaze of the nation’s ultimate hero is a young man primed to become an American Assassin.

Pencils || Favorite MG or Children’s Book

fave-childhood-books

I actually have three that I always go back to. Where The Red Fern Grows and Summer of the Monkeys by Winston Rawls were both set in Oklahoma where I was from and I loved them as a kid. The first one was actually filmed as a movie, twice, in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, home of my college alma matar.

The 1983 release The Dollhouse Murders by Betty Ren Wright is my other childhood book love. I was seven when it first came out, maybe eight or nine when I read it, and I loved that book so much. I lost the original copy I had many years ago, but about eleven years ago, I hunted down a copy online and now have it on my shelves.

Runner-Up Childhood Loves: the 1984 Dear Mr. Henshaw (Leigh Botts #1) and the 1982 Ramona the Pest (Ramona #2) by Beverly Cleary, the 1972 Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing (Fudge #1) by Judy Blume (which I read in 1984), and the 1957 Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle (Mrs. Piggle Wiggle #1) by Betty MacDonald (which I read in 1984).

Pens || A Basic Staple for Any Reader

Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte (published in 1847) is a classic. The copy I have I bought in 1988 or 1989. I was in middle school and had watched the old black and white movie with my oldest sister. Then I wanted to read the book and I did. It remains a favorite of mine to this day and always has it’s spot on my shelf.

Runner-Up: Definitely has to be Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell. Loved that book, and the movie.

Just in Print: This one might surprise some people but…Star Wars original trilogy books. I own multiple copies of that, older one that is falling apart and a newer one I recently ordered. I also own them in graphic novels. (And on a side note, I also own multiple copies of the movies as well—all of them).

Print and Digital: A lot of series I own in both digital and print. A few of them are:

  • Jill Shalvis – Cedar Ridge and Heartbreaker Bay series
  • Lori Foster –  Too Much Temptation  (book) and her Men Who Walk The Edge of Honor (series)
  • Maisey Yates  – Copper Ridge series
  • Jessica Lemmon – Bad Boy Series and her most recent Billionaire Bachelors series
  • Lauren Layne – New York’s Finest Series
  • Tessa Bailey – Made in Jersey, Crossing the Line, and Broke and Beautiful series
  • Katee Robert – The O’Malley Series

Twilight. I hated what the author did to the vampire myth in that book. I couldn’t finish it and it might be the only book I have ever physically tossed away from me. The next one would be Fifty Shades of Grey. Not a fan, and again, not a book I could finish reading.

So many. So, so many. But a few of them are:

  • Lord of the Rings by J.R. Tolkein
  • Harry Potter  by J.K. Rawling
  • Divergent by Veronica Roth
  • Snow Like Ashes  by Sara Raasch
  • Blake Blade  by Jennifer Estep

I am still working on my Shadowhunter and Hunger Games series, and a couple of new series I started buying is The Darkest Minds series by Alexandra Bracken and the Mitch Rapp series by the late Vince Flynn (American Assassin) and that is being continued by author Kyle Mills.

Book Summary

From USA Today bestselling author Julie Brannagh comes the next fun and incredibly sexy novel in her beloved Seattle Sharks series.

When Daisy Spencer wrote an erotic novella about the Seattle Sharks’ backup quarterback and her #1 crush, Grant Parker, she never expected it to become a runaway bestseller. If anyone discovers she wrote the sexy story, her days as a flight attendant for the Sharks would be over. But once she gets to know the real man behind the fantasy, her heart may be in more danger than her job.

Having Seattle fans think squeaky clean Grant is wild in bed is the last thing he needs-even if it might be closer to the truth than he will ever say. As he spends his days, and nights, with the gorgeous Daisy, he’s not interested in going back to the lonely life he once led. But when the real author of the novella is finally outed, Grant and Daisy must both reveal the secrets they’ve hidden away or risk losing a love that’s better than any fantasy.
