Forgiving isn’t easy. Forgetting may be impossible.

Greg Mallory isn’t the kind of man to wallow just because he was left at the altar. Not when there are plenty of women to help him forget his heartbreak. But as the only Mallory son he has an obligation to carry on the family name. When Greg’s runaway bride returns, his head tells him to keep his distance, but his body and his heart are both begging for a second chance.

Faith Copeland bolted out of Darling Cove with a shameful secret and stayed away for ten years thinking Greg Mallory would never forgive her. Coming home means facing her past and Greg. She just didn’t think he still had the power to make her melt after all this time.

One moment alone proves their attraction is stronger than ever. Are they brave enough to start fresh? Or will past secrets destroy their second chance at happy-ever-after once and for all?

Book Excerpt

Must Have Faith

Greg cleared his throat and leaned in. “Anyway, there’s something I want to ask you.”

A small wave of panic ticked up Faith’s heart rate. Was he going to ask her why she really left? Could this be the moment where she came clean? She swallowed. Hard. Yes. This is the perfect time. And place because he couldn’t make a ridiculous scene. Although he could leave her there alone. That thought sent a pain through her chest so sharp, she rubbed her blouse. Her heart was hammering under her fingers and her mouth went bone dry.

Greg watched her with curiosity and concern. “Faith?”

“Sure. You can ask me anything.” She sat up, ready to explain the worst mistake of her life and watch the man she loved grow to hate her before her very eyes. “Go ahead.”

“Do you think any less or different of me from what I told you about Miranda and the other women?” Greg’s voice carried a hint of pain like he feared her answer.

It was if she’d been tied to a pole in front of a firing squad…and they missed. God! He was concerned about himself and his behavior. But how to answer? Yes. Of course, it bothered her. And if the situation had been reversed where he’d left and while he’d been away she’d banged all kinds of men…let all different men have their way with her. In all different places and all different ways, Greg would have a heart attack. So yes, it bothered her. But that would make her the huge hypocrite.

“You’re not the only one who was possessive, Greg. I wanted you, remember. And I fought to get you. So yes, it hurts. But I know I have no right to feel that way.” Faith stood to go to the ladies’ room.

She wasn’t sure if she had to throw up or just needed to release some tears and gear up. She was ready to tell Greg about that night, but was thankful to have a minute to consider how she’d put it. “I’ll be right back.”

When she turned to step toward the back of the diner, a body plowed into her. The forceful push sent her to the ground and her palms smacked flat against the sticky linoleum.

Greg jumped up, pushing the man. “Hey! Watch it.” He reached down to pick her up, but was shoved backwards.

The man lifted her instead, holding her by the throat. There was something cold and sharp against her neck.

Faith knew from experience it was the long serrated edge of a knife.

****

In the time it took Greg to get to his feet, he’d drawn his gun.

The man’s face registered. He was the brother of the man his father had killed.

“I know who you are, asshole.” Greg’s feet were in position, his hand tight against the groves of the gun’s handle. “Get that knife away from her throat.”

“Good. And I guess you know how this works. Your father takes someone from me and I take someone from you.” He jammed his arm harder around Faith’s chest forcing a loud gasp to escape hoarsely from her.

“Maybe where you come from that’s justice.” Greg inched closer sending the man back a step. “Here…that’s going to make your mother bury another son. Is that what you want?”

The man pulled Faith away, his back hard against the counter. Whipping his head toward the register where the waitress stood frozen, he yelled, “You call anyone bitch, she dies, he dies and then you.”

“Make the call!” Greg screamed with confidence.

Faith’s face was blank, not looking at him. Hiding her fear, he suspected. To stop him from throwing all his emotion into his trigger finger. He watched the man’s eyes as he was trained searching for hints of his next move.

But when Faith looked up at him, her eyes were blinking fast then slow beats. Christ, was she having a stroke? Her fingers lifted off the man’s arms slightly and she went limp, falling out of his hold. The man jerked back confused. Faith wasn’t having a stroke, she was distracting him.

That’s my girl!

Greg shoved the gun into his curve of his back and dove pushing the man down. He climbed over Faith to get to him, kneeing her in the stomach and knocking against her head. But Greg didn’t care, he just needed that knife away from her. His right hand yanked the man’s hold on the knife and his knee pressed hard into the man’s groin. Swinging his other leg around to step on the man’s wrist, the knife came loose. He pushed it out of the way.

The man was subdued for the moment, but a surge of energy was expected. Preparing, Greg looked behind him to make sure Faith was a safe distance away. She wasn’t.

His throat swelled staring down the barrel of his own gun. “The safety’s not back on, Faith.”

“I know how to use a gun.” She stepped forward pointing his Glock at the man, who had decided not to struggle after all and had turned white.

A faint siren and the flash of lights turning the corner caught Greg’s attention. He lowered his voice. “Faith, put that gun down. Now!”

“You’re not going to take me,” she said pointing it at the man. “You are not going to take me!”

“No one is taking you anywhere, Faith. You’re safe. I’ve got this.”

“Gun!” An officer yelled storming into the diner, pointing his gun at Faith. “Drop it!”

Greg whipped his head around. “Stand down!”

“Mallory what’s going on?” Another officer thundered in.

“Someone take this piece of shit,” Greg responded. “That knife is his, watch the prints. He put it to her throat.”

“22409 requests immediate back-up to Sadie’s diner. Officer on the scene,” he said into the radio strapped to his shoulder.

“Copy that,” the acknowledgement crackled.

“Mallory, she’s got to lower that weapon.”

“Faith, look at me. Give me the gun.”

“He’s not going to take me.” Her voice squeaked like a small child.

“No one is going to take you anywhere. I’m here, Babe. You’re safe.” He inched closer, a strange feeling washing over him that she wasn’t talking to him and therefore not hearing him respond.

The tips of his fingers reached the rim of the gun barrel and his heart spiked when she didn’t jerk it away. The Glock slacked into his hand. He clicked the safety and shoved it into the curve of his lower back while Faith fell forward into his arms.

The Bride Takes A Groom by Lisa Berne

The Bride Takes A Groom by Lisa Berne

Lisa Berne’s Penhallow Dynasty continues with a pair of star-crossed childhood friends who meet again years later—and find love where they least expect it . . .

BOOK REVIEW

LISA BERNE
The Bride Takes A Groom
The Penhallow Dynasty #3
[usr 4 img=”06.png”]

I have to say, this was a very different kind of read. Lisa Berne created a heroine that reminded me, at least in part, of Scarlett O’Hara. Like Scarlett, Katherine is not an easy heroine to like let alone love. She’s cold, rude, and self-centered, and quite spoiled in terms of money and goods. And yet, underneath that troubled, selfish, icy exterior, there is much more to her than one might think. Because while she’s all those things above, she’s also self-sufficient, intelligent, determined, and resourceful, and she’s in perfect contrast to the lovable, likable hero, Hugo Penhallow.

Berne masterfully developed a flawed heroine that immediately engages a readers emotions, and while those might be negative at the start, she also managed to create a particularly unique, living, breathing person on the page. This is very much a heroine with something to learn, and her story is broad and absolutely fascinating.

The hero, Hugo, is a charming fellow who, despite his circumstances, has a bright outlook and a plan to improve his life. And while most modern humans would scoff at his plan to marry for money, others will no doubt understand what drives him to marry. He’s a good hero, though he is not without faults. Which makes his character just as fascinating to read about as Katherine’s character is.

The Bride Takes A Groom is a well-written, well-characterized historical romance. Both main characters make you feel things, even if they aren’t always positive at first. And while it is not an easy read, it is a vastly entertaining one. Especially if you love a good character study on top of a good, sweeping romance.

Katherine Brooke may be a fabulously wealthy heiress, but she’s trapped, a pawn in her parents’ ruthless game to marry her into the nobility. Then Captain Hugo Penhallow—so charming, as handsome as a Greek god—comes into her life once more, and suddenly she sees a chance to be free.

As a Penhallow, his is one of the highest names in the land, but still his family is facing ruin. So Katherine boldly proposes an exchange: his name for her money. But only if Hugo understands it’s merely a practical arrangement, and that she’s not surrendering herself entirely.

Back from eight years in America and determined to give his younger siblings a better life, Hugo agrees. He’s never fallen in love, so why not? Yet neither of them guesses that this marriage will become far, far more than they ever dreamed of…

BOOK EXCERPT

From THE BRIDE TAKES A GROOM:

Oh, damn, her heart was hammering hard within her, as if it were a caged animal trying to burst free. To combat it, to bring herself back into coolness,

into her mind she summoned an image, a certain passage from one of her hidden history books, this one about the ancient Romans. Cornelius Tacitus had written in 97 A.D. about the Sitones, a tribe in northern Europe which was believed to be a matriarchal society. Among the Sitones, Tacitus said, the women were powerful; the women chose their mates.

It was a wild, a radical idea back then—disapprovingly had Tacitus commented upon its harmful effects—and it still was, of course, seventeen hundred years later. Even in this modern era, in which civilization had evolved with things like the printing press, steam engines, inoculations, gas lights, the Encyclopædia Britannica, and Herschel’s great telescopes, women were still supposed to demurely sit around, waiting for some man to ask her to be his wife.

But an hour ago, Hugo Penhallow had unexpectedly strolled into her parents’ drawing-room, and maybe, just maybe, they could effect a trade to their mutual benefit. It was not, to say the least, a romantic proposition, but it had been a long, long time since she had indulged in girlish dreams of love, a soulmate, happily ever after.

And here, right in front of her, was an opportunity to escape Brooke House.

So to Hugo she said, in a voice that was only a little bit breathless:

“Marry me.”

CATHY MAXWELL
A Match Made in Bed
Spinster Heiresses #2
[usr 4.5 img=”06.png”]

In A Match Made in Bed, Soren York, Earl of Dewsberry has made it his mission to marry Miss Cassandra Holwell, an heiress with a fortune large enough to settle the debts he owes. However, things do not go as planned for the Earl, as Cassandra wants nothing to do with him or his marriage proposal.

This is very much a story of being careful what you wish for because things are not always what they seem in the lives of Soren, Cassandra, and those around them. Between them, there are many secrets and yet, there is also an honesty in their interactions with each other. They are real when so many around them are fake, which made them not only likable to me but also quite endearing and memorable.

I enjoyed getting to know Cassandra. She’s a strong, spirited young woman with dreams of marrying but also becoming more than just her husband’s wife. She is a delightful character who constantly surprises both Soren and the reader. She is not what is expected and yet she’s always done what she thought she must. An intriguing mix of personality!

Soren was a fun character as well. He’s desperate to wed, but there is an honor to him. A code for which he operates. I liked him a lot and I loved how he was with Cassandra, both a challenge and a temptation.

If you have yet to read Cathy Maxwell, you’re in for a treat with this book. As the second story in the Spinster Heiresses series, A Match Made In Bed is a creative and highly entertaining endeavor that holds so many fun and delightful surprises. I never felt as if I were left out of what happened in book one because this story kept me thoroughly engaged.

Stellar writing, fantastic characterization, and imaginative storytelling abilities made this story an absorbing historical romance read. In, fact, I read this book in one sitting because I couldn’t bear to put it down. Absolutely loved it!

Once upon a time there were three young ladies who, despite their fortunes, had been on the Marriage Mart a bit too long. They were known as the “Spinster Heiresses” . . .

Miss Cassandra Holwell is too tall, too bookish, and too smart—but she does have money and a father who wants a grand title for her. Cassandra hasn’t felt a desire to marry until she meets the sinfully handsome Duke of Camberly, who captures her imagination . . . until Soren York, Earl of Dewsberry and her family’s sworn enemy, steps in the way.

The Holwells ruined Soren’s family, and he’s lived on the knife’s edge trying to resurrect their fortunes . . . until he considers marrying the Holwell Heiress. Not only would her dowry give him the funds he needs, he has secretly had an eye on the independent-minded bluestocking since they both first realized the differences between men and women.

She likes to read; he has no patience for books. She knows little of sex; he is a man of the world and willing to school her. Her family destroyed his; his offer of marriage may be her only salvation.

Now Cassandra and Soren must learn to love each other for who they are, not what they are—and the lessons are becoming an exercise in absolute pleasure.

BOOK EXCERPT

From A MATCH MADE IN BED:

He’s here. I know he is,” Cassandra whispered in the ear of her friend Willa, lest she be overheard by either Lady Bainhurst sitting on the settee with them or the very handsome, highly desirable Duke of Camberly. He stood by Lady Bainhurst but Cassandra felt he gave her and Willa most of his attention.

“Who? Dewsberry?” Willa managed around the smile spread across her face for the duke’s benefit. She was far more interested in him than Cassandra’s sudden premonition that Soren York was close at hand.

Willa was as petite as Cassandra was tall and perfectly formed in every way. Her hair was raven black, and the two were dear friends—well, except when it came to their competition to earn the attention of the Duke of Camberly.

They’d even made a flirting game of it, attaching points for different actions of courtship—a point for an introduction, three points for each dance, five points if he called upon them. When a woman had been on the Marriage Mart as long as they had, she needed a bit of competition to sharpen her skills . . . not that either of them required the edge of a game when it came to Camberly.

He was young and amazingly handsome. He had broad shoulders, a lean jaw, and dark hair that emphasized the jewel blue of his eyes. What woman wouldn’t want to become his duchess?

Cassandra was actually ahead in the game by one point. She’d been wondering how many points being invited to this weekend would earn her when Willa had made her appearance in the reception room. They had not known the other was coming.

And now here was Camberly, ignoring his other guests and spending his time focusing on both of them.

Everyone knew he needed to marry money. She and Willa were the only two marriageable women invited to the dowager’s house party as far as Cassandra could see. Did this mean the duke intended to decide between the two of them? Perhaps even this very week?

The thought made her giddy. She wanted Camberly. He was “the one.” The very embodiment of all her romantic dreams. No other could match him. And she was not going to let Soren York ruin this country party and her one chance for marital happiness with his presence.

Willa proved what a good friend she was by momentarily turning her attention from hanging on to the duke’s every word to murmur, “I don’t see Dewsberry.”

“He’s here,” Cassandra insisted. She sat up straighter so that she could unobtrusively gain a better look around the room.

There had been someone lurking in the hall leading to the dining room. That was when she’d first experienced the suspicion that things weren’t completely right. However, she’d been so distracted with Willa’s presence and what it meant to her chances with the duke, she’d not been interested in concentrating on her inner sense.

Then again, the duke had come from that direction, making an appearance that had surprised everyone in the room by his lack of  fanfare. Still . . . Soren was here.

The tingling of the hairs at the nape of her neck had never failed her, especially since she’d been exercising it more than she wished for the past month. Soren seemed to be everywhere she went in spite of her best efforts to avoid him because she knew what he wanted—marriage.

Dewsberry might be an old and respected title but the earldom was done up. Ruined by generations of poor decisions and unwise gambling. Soren was hunting her because of the money she would inherit upon marriage and because her father’s lands abutted his. He was that obvious. However, she thought herself safe here. Why would Camberly, who also needed a rich wife, invite a competitor?

Unless the duke thought to hand off whichever heiress he didn’t want to Dewsberry?

The walls in the room seemed to close in around her.

She would not marry Dewsberry. She couldn’t. Her father would never  allow  it.  The Yorks were his enemies. They looked down on the Holwells, and neither she nor her father would subject themselves to their high-handed treatment.

But also, Soren had betrayed her. She could recall perfectly the pain of what he’d done to her. It had been close to eleven years ago, and the hurt, the disappointment was still surprisingly raw.

From the other side of the room, her father caught her eye. He was of average height, with bushy eyebrows and hair that had gone gray at a young age. Helen stood at his side as she always did. She had a short nose and a determined chin. Her hair had once been red but had faded to a dull brown. Her father had noticed Cassandra

MIA SOSA
Pretending He’s Mine
Love On Cue #2
[usr 5 img=”06.png”]

Okay, so it turns out, that if you mix the best friend’s little sister trope with the pretend relationship trope with the characterization, humor, and emotional writing style of Mia Sosa, you get a gripping and attractive read that you cannot put down.

Julian and Ash were so much fun together. Strong, yet vulnerable. Entertaining, but also serious. Where one lagged in life, the other lifted, and it made for such an amazing and vibrant read.

I loved Julian’s serious, no-nonsense agent approach. He saw something wrong and he couldn’t stop himself from pointing it out, but at the same time, his own sense of honor and loyalty kept holding him back. All the intersecting personality layers made him such a fantastic hero because how he viewed the world was not only important but also current and relevant. I absolutely loved him for that.

And Ash? She’s a woman after my own heart. Her doubts and fears and hurts from the past keep her from going after her dreams, and in some cases, even admitting she has them. She felt so realistic and sincere to me. The core of her character rings true because so many can relate to her. I adored her and I adored her journey in this book.

Pretending He’s Mine is one of those books that holds a thousand different life lesson inside it. Every page, there was something new to think about and consider, whether for the characters and their story journey, or for life in general. And if I wasn’t already a fan of Mia Sosa and her Love On Cue series, this book would’ve done it for sure.

Absolutely loved it. Highly recommend reading it.

Mia Sosa returns with another fun, flirty romance in her critically-acclaimed Love on Cue series!

For Hollywood agent Julian Hart, representing his best friend—megastar Carter Williamson—means it’s nearly impossible to keep his personal life and career separate. To make matters worse, Carter’s younger sister has been starring in Julian’s wildest fantasies more often than he’d care to admit. He knows she’s off-limits, but when Ashley shows up on his doorstep, needing a place to crash… suddenly his greatest temptation is sleeping down the hall.

Free-spirited Ashley Williamson doesn’t do commitment. Jobs, apartments, men… why let herself be tied down? But she’s had a crush on her older brother’s best friend for years and she’s committed to making Julian want her, one towel-clad midnight encounter at a time. But just as things start heating up, their steamy flirtation is interrupted by Carter’s east coast wedding. Ashley has no desire to go home and face her reputation as the family disappointment. But living with—dare she say dating?—a successful, sexy film agent could give them something else to talk about.

Julian can’t believe he agreed to fake a relationship with the one woman he can never have. And it’s going to take more than a little willpower to remember it’s all pretend. Or is it?

BOOK EXCERPT

From PRETENDING HE’S MINE:

From Chapter Seven

The next morning, my doubts return, and I chuckle at my naïveté. Because why, oh why is the simple act of making breakfast together a challenge, too?

It’s not my fault, really. Several factors are conspiring against me.

The first? Biceps porn. Holy shit, it’s a thing. When he lifts the pan from the stove, his biceps flex like thick rubber bands. If he were to hold himself above me during sex, I’d see them at close range. Up, down, swivel, and repeat.

The second factor? That apron looks fucking glorious on him. The strings are tied snugly around his trim waist, which emphasizes the nearly perfect V formed by his broad chest and shoulders. Damn, it’s hot as hell in here. I fan myself, but it doesn’t help. So when I’m sure he’s not looking, I grab the mister off the counter and spritz my face.

He catches the sound, though, and draws back. “Jesus. Did you just spray yourself with that?”

“Yeah. Why?” I pull on the collar of my T-shirt to let in some air.

He snickers, his eyes gleaming with amusement. “Ashley, that’s olive oil. You need to wipe that off.”

Great. My cheeks are on fire, and now that there’s oil on them, I just might be the first human cooking surface in existence. Swallow me whole, Mother Earth.

Shaking his head at my gaffe, he preps the waffle mix while I use a paper towel to clean myself. I should use a cleanser or something, but I don’t want to miss the biceps porn—or the apron porn for that matter. Besides, olive oil must be good for the skin.

“No blueberries, right?” he asks.

“You remember.”

“Yeah. And I remember you love strawberries, but I’m not putting them in my waffle maker. I’ll toss them on top.”

“Fine with me.”

I squeeze my fists at my sides when I discover there’s more porn. Whisk porn. He’s got a mixing bowl in one hand and a whisk in the other, and he’s beating that waffle mix like he’s its daddy.

He looks up and finds me staring at him. “Everything okay?”

I nod like a human bobblehead. “Mm-hmm.”

He transfers the mix to a measuring cup and pours the batter into the waffle maker. Then he flips it over. Oooh, it’s a double waffle maker. Fancy. Unaware that he’s the new host of my personal cooking show on the Julian Channel, he bends at the waist and wipes the metal plate with a kitchen towel, giving me a DVR-worthy view of his butt. His Nielsen ratings would go into the stratosphere every time he made that move.

“Can you wash the strawberries?” he asks.

Sure, no problem.  That ass is going to get someone arrested one day.

“Ash?”

Julian’s voice snatches me out of my happy place. “What?”

“The strawberries. Can you wash them?”

I shake my head and push out my lower lip. “Didn’t you hear me? I said, ‘Sure, no problem.’ ”

He laughs. “In your mind, maybe, but not out loud.”

“Sorry. Watching you cook requires my full attention. You’re so precise, and there are so many steps.” I retrieve the strawberries from the fridge and rinse them in the sink. How do I get these thoughts out of my head? What can I do to stop myself from wanting him? I should probably confiscate his apron. That would be a good place to start.

Beside me, Julian wipes down the counter. When he’s done, he bumps me with his hip and reaches for a clean strawberry, breaching my personal space to get to it. I try to bump him back, but he blocks me with his body, lifts the fruit over his head, and drops everything except the crown into his mouth.

The moment he bites into it, I sway on my feet. When he slides his tongue over his bottom lip to catch the juices, I swoon. Screw you, Julian. Screw you. But not really. What I really mean is, screw me, Julian. screw me.

BOOK REVIEW

CHRISTI BARTH
Never Been Good
Bad Boys Gone Good #2
[usr 4 img=”06.png”]

Never Been Good is the second book in author Christi Barth’s Bad Boys Gone Good series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. In the story, Flynn Maguire and his two brothers are living in Oregon under the witness protection program while awaiting the trial of a Chicago mob boss that tried to set Flynn up for crimes he didn’t commit. It’s in Oregon that Flynn meets Sierra Williams, a waitress at the bar where he works, and a woman who has as many secrets as he does.

Both Flynn and Sierra are on the run from their past, though for different reasons. They’re good at keeping secrets and doing their best to fly under the radar, but they also can’t deny the attraction they have toward each other. They mesh because they understand what it’s like to need boundaries but also crave the closeness and trust of another person.

Entertaining, intense, with strong characters and an intriguing plotline, Never Been Good is a wonderful book and exciting romance read. Flynn and Sierra share some great chemistry and I loved their banter.

If you haven’t yet read anything by Christi Barth, Never Been Good is a great book to start your journey. Flynn Maguire isn’t really a bad guy. Sure, he worked for the mob, but he ran a legitimate business—on paper anyway—and it paid enough to keep his brother out of the lifestyle. Until they turned on him. Now he’s stuck in Witness Protection, tending bar in Nowheresville Oregon… and pissed the life he knew is gone. The only bright spot? Fantasizing about his quiet, secretive, beautiful coworker.

Sierra Williams is a woman on the run. All she wants now is to settle into small town life… and ignore the brooding, sexy bartender who can’t seem to take his eyes off her. Flynn’s bad-boy vibe pushes all her buttons, but Sierra fell for the wrong man once already. She can’t afford to let her guard down again. Except Flynn’s tough exterior is slowly melting away to reveal the sweet man beneath and their attraction is too strong to resist.

Sierra and Flynn are falling fast, but they’re both keeping so many secrets. The truth could ruin everything… unless a girl who’s a little bad is perfect for a guy who’s never really been good.

From NEVER BEEN GOOD:

Seven Months Earlier
Graceland Cemetery, Chicago
11:30 p.m., October 31

“This is nice.” Frank Mullaney’s brother nudged him, flashing a grin from behind the enormous fake white beard. “We haven’t celebrated a Halloween together in years.”

Yeah. His brother Ryan had lost his mind, no doubt about it. His brother, who happened to be currently dressed like Santa Claus. On freaking Halloween.

Not that it was any better than his own off-season costume. Frank had flat-out refused—at first—when Ryan laid the leprechaun costume across his bed. Until he pointed out the two best points of the costume. A big red beard and hat that would totally disguise Frank’s features, and a fake pot of gold. Aka something that wouldn’t look weird for him to be carrying, just like the bag good old Santa had draped over his shoulder.

Since it turned out that just under two million in cash couldn’t be stuffed in your pockets.

Especially not when traipsing through a cemetery. On Halloween. At almost midnight, surrounded by drunken, screaming people on ghost tours.

“That’s probably because we’re grown ass men. Trick or treating would be weird at our age.” The thought of candy made Frank remember that he’d skipped lunch. And dinner. Because Ryan showed up at his front door with costumes and this crazy plan. “Although I wouldn’t say no if you pulled a Snickers out of your pocket and tossed it my way.”

Ignoring him, Ryan continued, his voice a little softer. “We haven’t celebrated Halloween since Mom died.”

Way to bring the mood back to serious-as-fuck. Grim enough to match the gravestones they were skirting. “You mean since she was murdered.” Because Ryan had just shared that little bombshell with him. It was still rattling around in his head like a pinball. God knew it hadn’t sunk in yet.

Ryan stopped at the edge of a replica of a Greek temple. He dropped his sack onto the concrete foundation of the tomb. Fisted his hands on the red velvet and padding near his waist. “Can we not talk about that right now? One thing at a time. Let’s get through tonight. Through the next couple of weeks. Then, I promise, we’ll sit down and hash everything out.”

Classic Ryan. Solving problems. Staying focused on the long game. It was exactly what he did as the right hand man for the leader of the Chicago mob.

Did…past tense. Seeing as how today he and Frank had stolen all of the mob’s cash. And then tomorrow, they’d watch their colleagues and friends get arrested in a sting—and hopefully the missing money would be attributed to the Fed’s raid. After that, the Mullaney brothers would disappear forever, courtesy of the U.S. Marshals Service.

Frank shifted his weight from one foot to the other. The frost-bitten grass made a crunching sound. Probably similar to the one his bones would make if this whole plan failed and the mob ever caught up with them.

“Are you going to talk to Kieran, too?” Because their little brother was out of the loop on all of it. He had no idea that his big brothers were even in the mob, let alone close to the top. He was balls deep in law school.

Until tomorrow.

Until they ripped that away from him.

Just to save Frank.

How was that fair? God. Frank swallowed so hard he swore he could hear his Adam’s apple scraping against his throat.

Ryan’s blue eyes shifted to the side. Easy enough to see his discomfort at being pinned down, with the whole place lit up with spotlights and luminarios along the paths and footlights edging the most famous tombs. “You and I will talk first. Then we’ll decide, together, how far in to dial Kieran.”

“You think he’ll hate us?”

Ryan’s mouth turned downward into a bitter smirk. “Since it was all my idea to put us into Witness Protection, yeah, I’m sure he’ll hate me. For a while. Pretty sure that you will, too. Once our new reality hits.”

“No way. Not possible.” The only way they’d survived the death of their mom was by banding together as tight as stucco on drywall. Their dad dying…ah, no. Being murdered by McGinty, per the other surprise truth Ryan laid on him today. Their dad’s death had made their bond more unshakeable. Strong enough to get them through their worst days. It made them strong enough to survive anything, as long as the three of them were together. He could never, would never hate Ryan.

“I’ll check back in with you in a month, when you’re jonesing for an MMA fight.”

How many more surprises were coming? Frank shook his head. “I can’t fight anymore?” The mixed martial arts training started as a way to prove that even though he sat behind a desk, he was just as tough as everyone else in McGinty’s organization. Appearances mattered. Respect had to be earned.

Kicking ass in the ring went a long way to making sure people stopped calling him a pencil pusher. But he liked it, too. Liked teaching the skills to kids so they could defend themselves. A good fight worked out all his stress. And yeah, he’d cop to getting a thrill from winning the competitions, too.

“Keeping our noses clean is a pretty big requirement in WITSEC. I think an underground fight club wouldn’t go over—” Ryan broke off. Grabbed Frank by the neck and pulled him down behind the marble tomb.

“What?”

Ryan put his finger to his lips. Then he pointed at another tour group, coming at them from the edge of the lake. This one was full of shivering women in skimpy versions of superhero costumes, hanging on the arms of already drunk and stumbling men.

The Last King by Katee Robert (Review)

The Last King By Katee Robert

THE LAST KING by Katee Robert

Beckett and Samara’s story is now available!

Ultra wealthy and super powerful, the King family is like royalty in Texas. But who will keep the throne? New York Times bestselling author Katee Robert introduces a red-hot new series.

BOOK REVIEW

KATEE ROBERT
The Last King
The Kings #1
[usr 5 img=”06.png”]

Every once in a while, I read a book and I love it so much I have no words to describe it. That’s the dilemma I have right now with THE LAST KING by Katee Robert. This book touched on everything I love about reading romance, and it did it in a way that made this story such a flawless, effortless read.

Samara and Beckett are both headstrong, proud people. They love what they do, and they even love competing against each other while they do it. They also have an unwanted attraction that keeps drawing them into situations that directly conflict with their roles as rivals.

Samara is a strong woman who takes pride in herself and in her job. She knows what she wants and she isn’t shy about doing what she needs to do to get it.  But unlike her boss, she has a good heart, a vulnerable heart even, and Beckett, with all his charming and tempting faults, keeps pulling on its strings.

Beckett wants Samara and he’s making no secret of it.

Beckett also isn’t backing down even though there is a part of him that knows she’s right about them being bad for each other. They may be rivals, but they’re good together, and she’s the only person in the world he wants to lean on. Too bad leaning on her threatens both her job and her life.

Both Samara and Beckett are fantastic, well-rounded characters. They’re easy to like and I loved the chemistry they share. They fit together so well and their differences provide the perfect amount of conflict to keep their relationship interesting and dangerous.

I’ve been a fan and reader of Katee Robert’s work for years now and I’ve always loved the books I’ve read from her, but this book, The Last King, is my absolute favorite. I love the family dynamics. I love the style of writing and the depth of the physical and emotional conflicts. I love the characters and the deep seeds of family, both the loyalty and the betrayals. I love that each character in the story is fascinating and read both honest and real. These people live and breathe on the page, and that makes them engaging and dynamic and so damn intriguing you not only can’t put the book down, but you’re also craving more. Of everything.

Love. Love. Love this book. Cannot recommend it highly enough!

THE MAN SHE HATES TO LOVE

Beckett King just inherited his father’s fortune, his company-and all his enemies. If he’s going to stay on top, he needs someone he can trust beside him. And though they’ve been rivals for years, there’s no one he trusts more than Samara Mallick.

The rebel. That’s how Samara has always thought of Beckett. And he’s absolutely living up to his unpredictable ways when he strides into her office and asks for help. She can’t help wondering if it’s a legit request or just a ploy to get her into bed. Not that she’d mind either one. After all, she likes to live on the edge too.

But soon the threats to the King empire are mounting, and the two find family secrets darker than they ever imagined and dangerous enough to get them both killed.

Praise for The Last King

“Top Pick! Beckett and Samara are a fantastic, modern couple. They clash in the boardroom and the bedroom, are total equals, and their bring-it-on spirit makes every interaction lively and exciting — whether clothes are on or off. … The heart of this romance is the development of trust between Beckett and Samara, and Robert expertly unfolds it, revealing the emotional connection on both sides under the flash and fire of their irresistible chemistry. 4 1/2 stars.”—RT Book Reviews

Heaven was Samara in a little green dress.

Beckett watched her walk across the lobby, her mile-long legs eating up the distance with ease. That glimpse of wildness she’d given him last night was in full effect today, her hair a mass of black waves that seemed to curl and snap around her shoulders with each step. Her dress fitted her like a second skin, sloping down over her breasts, her stomach, to her hips and thighs.

But it was her dark eyes that drew and held him. Anger and desire and something like guilt lingered there, and she held his gaze as she stopped in front of him. “Do I meet your expectation?”

“You’re beautiful.”

She arched a single eyebrow. “I know.”

That surprised a laugh out of him. Beckett turned to the elevator bank and offered his elbow. The gentlemanly move was over-the-top for their current circumstances, but he couldn’t be this close to her without touching her. Kissing her now, here, was a terrible damn idea, so he’d settle for the small touch. “No false modesty. I like that.”

“I think we’ve established that I don’t operate based on what you like.” Despite her words, amusement pulled at the edges of her lips, and she set her hand carefully on his forearm. “Every time I think I have your number down, you surprise me. Most guys get pissy pants if a woman doesn’t fall at their feet when they call her beautiful.”

“I’m not most guys.”

He waited for the elevator door to open and led her onto it. “You can’t fit me into a box and write me off, Samara.”

“I’m beginning to see that.” She shook her head, her hair brushing against his shoulder. “My life would be a whole lot easier if I could.”

He couldn’t argue that, so he didn’t bother. Beckett took them up to the executive level. He noted the way she studied everything, obviously filing away every bit of information she could lay her eyes on. “What does Lydia pay you these days?”

She dropped her arm and stepped back. “Oh no. I don’t think so.” She pointed at him. “We went over this last night. I’m not for sale.”

“It’s an innocent question.”

“It is most definitely not an innocent question.” She looked like she wanted to take off her shoe and throw it at his head. “I don’t care what issue you and your aunt have. I’m not part of it. You don’t get to use me as leverage. I’m not a pawn for either of you to sacrifice in this pissing match you have going on.”

Shame tried to take hold, but he wouldn’t let it. Samara knew the game, no matter how much it apparently offended her. “I’m the bad guy for trying to offer you a job, but I’m sure you agreed to show up here solely out of the goodness of your heart.” He pretended to think about it. “Wait, no you didn’t—which you already admitted. You’re here because Lydia wants to do whatever it takes to sink Morningstar. Full stop.” He motioned at the offices behind him. “Wake up, Samara. I’m only playing the game she made the rules for.”

She took in the empty COO office on the other side of the glass wall. “She poached your employees.”

“Convenient timing, don’t you think?”

“You’re not still harping on that paranoid talk about Lydia meeting Nathaniel.” Samara hesitated and then moved to stand in front of him. She pressed her lips together and then very gently said, “Do you think maybe it’s a good idea for you to talk to someone?”

Beckett jerked back. “What?”

There was nothing but sympathy in her dark eyes. “I’m serious, Beckett. I’ve known you a long time, at least by reputation, and this delusion you have going isn’t like you. Is it possible that Nathaniel’s death is hitting you harder than you realize? That you’re fixating on Lydia instead of your own grief because it’s easier to deal with an enemy than face the fact you can never make things right with your father?”

Every word flayed him, cutting to the quick. Beckett gritted his teeth against the need to tell Samara that she was the one who wasn’t thinking clearly. To yell. To expel some of the ugliness that had been brewing in him for a very, very long time. “I didn’t call you here to offer you a job, and I sure as hell don’t need a shrink.”

She stood her ground as he advanced. Her heels put them at the same height and she still managed to look down her nose at him. “Then why did you call me here?”

Because I can’t spend another moment alone without going out of my mind.

He didn’t say it. To admit how long it had been since he’d felt a connection with another person was to hand Samara—Lydia—a loaded gun and invite her to point it directly at him. He didn’t answer her verbally at all. Beckett cupped her waist and slowly pulled her against him, giving her plenty of time to register his intentions.

“Beckett.” Despair colored her tone and she gave a desperate laugh. “What are we doing?”

“I don’t know.” Using a hand on the small of her back, he pressed her firmly against him. “I don’t want to stop.”

Samara hesitated, but finally placed her hands gingerly against his chest. He waited, letting her decide. Yes or no. Push or pull. Stay or go. She hitched a breath. “I don’t want to stop, either.”

What A Difference A Duke Makes by Lenora Bell

What A Difference A Duke Makes by Lenora Bell

BOOK REVIEW

2018 Top Pick Books

LENORA BELL
What A Difference A Duke Makes
School For Dukes #1
[usr 5 img=”06.png”]

In WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DUKE MAKES, daring, witty Miss Mari Perkins goes searching for a job and winds up falling for a devilish duke who thinks he has no time for love or romance. A brilliant, heartfelt historical romance tale about what it means to find a family not of blood but borne through patience and love.

I absolutely adored this book from start to finish. Mari is the perfect blend of innocence and cleverness, of daring and friendship. I loved how she interacted with the Duke’s children, earning their respect and trust while also engaging their interest in learning, and how she challenged and inspired the Duke of Banksford, Edgar Rochester, to not only listen but also follow through on what he heard. She gained all of their trust by being true to herself, even though she wasn’t entirely forthcoming with her own story and secrets. She was endearing and she made this book such a pleasure to read.

If you’re looking for an incredibly enjoyable and moving historical romance story with a cast of characters that will steal your heart from the moment they appear, pick up a copy of WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DUKE MAKES by Lenora Bell. It’s the first book in the author’s School for Dukes series and it sets an incredibly high bar for all the books to follow.

Such a fun and moving story. Highly recommend reading this book and this author. I couldn’t put it down!

Lost: One heart to an arrogant duke

Mari knows how to wrap even the most rebellious children around her finger. But their demanding, wickedly handsome father? He won’t be quite so easy to control. And there’s something else she can’t seem to command. Her heart. The foolish thing beats so wildly every time Edgar is near.

Found: A forbidden passion neither can deny

Book Excerpt

From WHAT A DIFFERENCE A DUKE MAKES:

“Not one in one thousand governesses would lecture me as you do, Miss Perkins.”

“As a governess I have a duty to point out misbehavior.”

“Impudent minx.”

Why was he grinning at her as if he liked impudent minxes more than anything? And why couldn’t she stop noticing how nicely shaped his lips were? Firm on top, yet sensually flared below.

“Perhaps I deserve a thorough tongue-lashing,” he mused.

Which sounded quite wicked when spoken in such a low, husky voice.

His gaze shifted to her lips. “Are you planning to give me another?”

“Only if you’re bad, Your Grace.”

He must have taken a step nearer to her. Or had she been the one to move closer? So close.

A reckless desire formed in her mind, blotting out her customary good sense. A desire to misbehave. Just this once.

“Or . . .” She rose to her tiptoes, placing her palms against his rock-solid chest. “I could be the bad one . . .”

EVA LEIGH
Counting On A Countess
The London Underground #2
[usr 4.5 img=”06.png”]

Oh, how fun this book was! And what a fantastic twist on the marriage of convenience trope!

Christopher “Kit” Ellingsworth is a war veteran and a pleasure-seeking newly minted Earl. He hides his demons behind his vices of choice and has refused to change despite the well-meaning advice of his friend and mentor. Yet, when that same friend leaves him a sizeable fortune under the stipulation that he must marry within 30 days, Kit is determined to make it happen. And the brazen, mystifying Tamsyn Pearce is the perfect woman to wed him. Or she is until he discovers his new wife is the one who gains control of his inheritance instead of him.

Excellent writing, intriguing characters, and a dynamic storyline combine to make Counting on the Countess a great standalone historical romance read and the perfect follow up tale to the first book in The London Underground series. It’s a longer book, of course, coming in at around 384 pages, but the pacing had an easy, effortless flow to it. Each page just carried me onto the next one.

I loved it!

When a handsome earl offers to wed her and send her back to Cornwall with a hefty allowance, Tamsyn agrees. After all, her secrets could land her in prison and an attentive, love-struck spouse could destroy everything.

BOOK EXCERPT

From COUNTING ON A COUNTESS:

I’m going to be married to this man? Mercy.

They pulled back in unison and her eyes flew open. His gaze was clouded with dazed pleasure and astonishment.

It seemed he’d also been shocked by the heat of their kiss and the speed of its intensity. He, a known rake and libertine, looked aroused by what surely had to be one of the chastest kisses he’d experienced in a long while.

Except it hadn’t been chaste. It had been brief, but their tongues lightly touching had been profoundly erotic, hinting at greater pleasure to come.

He cleared his throat. “That was . . . a welcome revelation.”

Her thoughts whirled while her body clamored for more. Hellfire—if this quick kiss had affected her so much, what would happen when they went to bed together? What if she liked it? What if she loved it, and her heart followed her body’s devotion?

Tamsyn was about to join with this man for the rest of her life. Aside from a few facts, she knew almost nothing about him. He was basically a stranger. Yet in three days, they would share a bed. They would share everything. According to the law, she would belong to him, and her own identity would dissolve.

Was this the right choice? She’d gotten what she wanted, but she couldn’t help the fear that poked its sharp fangs into her heart.

I have no idea what I’m getting myself into.

RISEN
Blood Eternal #1
[usr 5 img=”06.png”]

In RISEN, Charlie dreams of getting away from her life of seclusion, and the cozy cabin in the woods she shares with her aunt. Then she gets her wish, though not in the way she expects. Because Charlie’s life is turned upside down when her beloved aunt is kidnapped by vampires and her sedate life swiftly becomes much more than thought it was. And what’s more, it’s up to her to find and save her aunt. That is, if she can survive the night with the vampire who’s been ordered to kill her…

When I first heard about RISEN, I expected a vampire novel much like I’ve read in the past. It quickly became apparent, however, that this book is far beyond what I expected from it.

Excellent characterization, lush settings, thrilling danger, and stellar writing make RISEN stand out in a way that is truly unique and exciting. There are many twists and turns in this book, and all of them organic to the story and the choices each character within it makes. Which is what makes RISEN such an intriguing and enthralling read.

From the first word of this book, I knew I was in for a serious treat and I wasn’t disappointed. Nor could I put it down once I started reading it. I loved the story and the characters, and I cannot wait to read what’s in store for me as a reader when the next book in this series comes out.

If you’re looking for an intense, well-written, and thoroughly entertaining paranormal romance read, pick up a copy of RISEN by Cole Gibsen. It’s the first book in what is and promises to continue to be an exciting new vampire series.

Fans of Vampire Diaries and Twilight will be thirsting for this latest vampire addiction…

My aunt has been kidnapped by vampires, and it’s up to me to save her. Only…I had no idea vampires existed. None. Nada. I’m more of a reader than a fighter, and even though I’d been wishing to escape my boring existence in the middle of nowhere, I’d give anything to have it back now if it meant my aunt was safe.

Then there’s the vampire Sebastian, who seems slightly nicer than most of the bloodsuckers I’ve run into so far. Yes, he’s the hottest being I’ve ever come across, but there’s no way I can trust him. He swears he’s helping me get answers, but there’s more to his story. Now I’m a key pawn in a raging vampire war, and I need to pick the right ally.

But my chances of surviving this war are slim at best, when the side I choose might be the one that wants me dead the most.

BOOK EXCERPT

From RISEN:

“Don’t say it like that, Charlie. I wanted to protect you.” She tugs on the edge of my cardigan, pulling me toward her. “I love you. You’re the most important thing in my life, do you understand?”

There’s a desperation in her eyes that tightens my throat. Swallowing hard, I nod.

She lets go of me with a sigh. “Maybe I took it too far.” She sweeps her dreadlocks over her shoulder and twists them tightly. “All I’ve ever wanted was to keep you safe.”

Safe. The world spirals, cold and slippery, down my spine. “What are you so afraid of?”

She opens her mouth only to shut it again.

Jax growls.

We turn as he claws at the door.

“The only thing there is to be afraid of,” she whispers. “The monsters.”

What were you thinking about just then?” His gaze fell to her mouth. “Never mind. You don’t have to tell me. It’s written all over your face.”

She licked her lips as he stepped closer, as he backed her against the wall and bracketed her in with his hands on either side of her head. He felt bigger in this position, as if his shoulders could block out the very sun. You have to get him to back off. You’re too close. She leaned against the wall, the move arching her back just a little. Beckett’s gaze dropped to where her breasts pressed against her blouse, and he dragged in an unsteady breath. As if he was using every ounce of willpower not to touch her. He dragged his eyes up to meet hers. “You were thinking about that night.”

She could deny it, but it would be pointless. “Yeah.”

Slowly, oh so slowly, he moved one hand to sift his fingers through her hair. When she didn’t immediately answer, he leaned closer yet. “I think about it, too.” He trailed his fingers through her hair until he reached her shoulder and his thumb dipped beneath the fabric of her shirt. “All the fucking time.” He dropped his hand farther, the tips of his fingers tracing over her breast in a touch so light she was half sure she imagined it.

Might have convinced herself she imagined it if her entire body wasn’t tuned to his in that moment.

Touch me.

As if reading her thoughts, he shifted closer, his leg sliding between hers. The move forced her skirt up as she spread her legs to accommodate his thigh. Higher and higher until he was firmly pressed against her clit. It throbbed in time with her heartbeat, and it was everything she could do not to rub on his thigh like a mindless version of herself.

She felt mindless. Samara gave up her determination not to touch him. She couldn’t wrap her legs around his waist because of her damn skirt, but she ran her hands up his chest. “We can’t.”

“I know.” But he didn’t stop. He slid his hands down to her ass, urging her to grind against his thigh. Slowly, so incredibly slowly, as if he had all the time in the world. He dragged his mouth over her collarbone, the faint rasp of whiskers drawing a whimper from her lips.

Samara dug her fingers into his hair, and he went still. Waiting. She pulled him up and took his mouth the way she’d wanted to since she’d snuck out of that hotel room six months before. She flicked his tongue with hers, teasing him even as he resumed the delicious movement between them again. Yes, yes, do that, don’t stop.

Beckett let her have control for all of two seconds, and then he deepened the kiss, pressing her more firmly against the wall. He took with his mouth even as he gave with his body, hitching her higher until her toes barely touched the floor and she was completely at his mercy. Pleasure sparked through her, and she kissed him harder. It wasn’t enough, might never be enough, but she couldn’t stop.

Not when she knew that, as good as this was, what came next was even better.

I am holding my breath again. Is that how I’m going to get over this little hurdle? Suffocate myself? Is that even possible? I’m pretty sure we have some breathing trigger in our brains, but my brain is a bit pissy with me so maybe it would conveniently forget about the button.

I push air out consciously, quietly, and he takes his seat.

‘Anyway…’ I prompt impatiently.

His smile is a clicker. Is he laughing at me? Arrogant arsehole! That’s be just like him. See? That’s the problem! I know him. I’m not one of his other women. I know that is he as bastardy as he is sexy.

‘How did you sleep?’

I blink at him, my eyes wide. ‘You’ve already asked me that.’

‘You didn’t answer.’

I except a sign that speaks of anger. ‘Like I always do. Seriously, Jack. My desk is covered in paper. I have to get to work.’

I’m your work,’ he says with a shrug.

Insolent bastard.

He leans forward, and while his face is casual there is an urgency in the flecks of gold that fill his eyes. ‘Did you see him last night?’

I want to remind him of the salient fact I pointed out the night before. It’s not his damned business. But I’m not sure I can say that with such conviction now that I’ve tasted his mouth; now that I’ve been stunned by his desire.

Can I skirt around his question?

You’re my work? Okay, the thing is I have the New York guys waiting on contracts, you have a meeting in a week that I have to prepare for and Athens wants your input-which means my input- on a lease agreement. And I need to – ‘

‘Quiet.’

God! Don’t hate me, but when he’s bossy I love it. And he’s almost always bossy.

I glare at him across his desk; it’s best if he doesn’t know that this is just about my favourite version of him.’

I have to be more cautious. From the rising volume of the squeals emanating from the backyard, cake consumption has concluded and the party will be wrapping up as the sugar highs hit, the early departers fleeing past my RV parked out front. Spotting the princess in an R-rated embrace with a biker would be bad for my business. You can’t be a dirty girl and host children’s birthday parties for a living. The moms will kill you. Fortunately, the moms aren’t mind readers. I’m only a party-perfect princess on the outside. Riding anywhere with Rev would be career suicide.

My bad voice promptly weighs in. But only if you get caught.

“I don’t do bikers.”

Something flashes across Rev’s face. “You don’t get hurt on my watch. I promise.”

“You’re not an ax murderer?”

He reaches into his pocket and pulls out the wallet attached to his belt by a silver chain. Silently, he flips it open and holds it out so I can read his driver’s license. There’s a military ID underneath it, too, the kind of card that gets you into Nellis Air Force Base.

“Your name isn’t Rev.” According to the State of Nevada’s laminated plastic, he’s one Jaxon Brady.

“Road name,” he says tersely.

I examine the license again. He’s also turning thirty-three in four weeks. I bet he won’t be booking a celebratory princess party.

“Wow.” I hand back his wallet. “Former navy?”

He nods, as if it’s no big deal. “SEAL. You’d be safe with me.”

He’s not big on talking. Or negotiating, asking, or sweet-talking. I’ve always trusted my instincts, though, and right now they’re on board with Rev Brady. Completely, totally, 100 percent in favor of getting on this man’s bike and riding off with him. Somewhere. Wherever he wants to go. He’s big and strong and tempting. He’s fought for our country and kept everyone safe.

How bad can he be?

The little voice in my head pipes right up. How bad do you want him to be?

That voice needs a gag.

“Think about it,” he says and then he turns and saunters toward his bike. I stand there, watching his ass the whole way, and wondering why I don’t mind his attitude. He’s scary as shit. He’s not Mr. White Picket Fence and he’s not promising happily ever after, but the man has a fantastic butt and I’m lonely. That’s all it is. I need to get out more, need to make a point of seeing someone.

Someone else.

Anyone else. There are absolutely, positively no bikers anywhere in my future.

The man occupying her thoughts swept up beside her on a cloud of freshly showered deliciousness, his hand taking a proprietorial hold of the back of her barstool and his smoky, heavy-lidded smile stripping her naked.

Alex.

‘Hi.’ Libby closed her slack-jawed mouth and swivelled to face him, turning her back on the stranger, never one to pass up a golden opportunity. She hated rudeness, but if Beer Breath was too stubborn or thick-skulled to take the hint…

Alex kept his stare on her, his smile genuine and warm enough to melt her underwear clean off, and then signalled the waiter with a flick of his wrist.

Libby sensed the moment when Beer Breath slinked away, and the hairs on the back of her neck settled—but only temporarily, because Alex hadn’t taken his eyes off her. In fact, he was looking at her as if he was seconds from devouring her whole.

She shivered, delicious tendrils snaking to all her erogenous zones. ‘What are you doing here?’ Libby took a slug of her previously untouched drink, the burn calming her enough to meet his bold stare with one of her own.

‘I came to invite you out for a late supper. I was on my way to Reception and then I spotted you here.’ His hand slid from the back of her stool, and he settled into the one next to her, passing his order to the waiter before returning his disconcerting focus to her.

She stared back, lost for words and missing the proximity of his hand on her chair. He was close enough that his warmth traversed the space between them, but far enough away that she battled her body’s urge to sway closer. And keep on swaying.

‘What?’ One corner of his mouth kicked up. ‘What kind of host would I be if I left you to fend for yourself on your first night in a strange city?’

She couldn’t help the snort that left her. ‘The non-stalker kind…?’

He took the jibe with a cocksure arch of one brow, sipping wine while his poised stare flicked over her face from feature to feature.

Libby flushed hot all over. The ‘stalker’ comment had been beneath her. He hadn’t once touched her, hadn’t bought her drink, hadn’t tried to grab her phone, hadn’t even chased away her unwanted admirer—he had simply given her the out she’d wanted. The rest was all her.

What was wrong with her? Rudeness to a generous host and influential employer? All because he’d awoken needs within her? Needs too long dormant. Needs she’d never had before. Needs threatening to overwhelm her in their intensity.

Hardly his fault.

“So then more money will get you to stay,” he said dismissively, as if he’d closed a case. He tossed her crumpled-up resignation letter into the brass trash can sitting beside his desk.

Frustration—and not just with this conversation—overwhelmed her, overcoming her natural inclination to avoid confrontation, and she blurted out, “No!”

Working for him these past two years had increased her frustration because of all those damn fantasies he’d inspired.

“But you just said—”

“I took the job because I needed money,” she said. “I needed money then.”

His eyes narrowed more as he studied her face. “And you don’t need it now?”

“My reason for leaving has nothing to do with money,” she said. Had she not found another source of income, she would have been forced to stay, but he didn’t need to know that.

“So you do have a reason.”

He wasn’t the trial lawyer of their partnership, but he could have been. She felt like she was being cross-examined on the witness stand. And she didn’t enjoy it one bit. Quitting was not a crime.

“I don’t have to give you a reason.” At least she didn’t think she did.

Maybe she should have had a lawyer look at that employment contract before she’d written her resignation letter. But no matter how much she paid, no lawyer would be as good as Simon Kramer. He was the best.

And, according to his ex-lovers, not just at the law…

“Why don’t you want to tell me?” he asked, and he stepped closer now, so close that she could feel the heat of his body through his suit and her cardigan and skirt.

Heat flushed her body, making her skin tingle. She tried to step back but the desk stopped her, the hard wood pressing into the backs of her thighs as he nearly touched the front of her. Her breasts pushed against the front of the gray cardigan as she struggled for breath. She had never been this close to him before. It was more than unsettling. Her knees trembled and her already tripping pulse quickened even more.

“Because it’s personal,” she murmured. And they had never been anything but businesslike with each other, except in her dreams.

He leaned down, so close that his warm breath whispered across her lips as he asked, “Are you in love with me?”

The Bastard’s Bargain Excerpt

It wasn’t until the front door closed behind Ivan that the reality of her situation sank in. Dmitri was furious. He might have faked it for his friend, but he stood next to her, a pillar of stone with anger coming off him in waves. His grip on her elbow didn’t hurt, but if she’d tried to leave, he would have restrained her.

She should be afraid. She should be terrified.

Keira’s heartbeat picked up, adrenaline kicking in. She swung to face him with a fierce smile on her face. “You didn’t compliment me on my dress.” It was a work of fucking art. She smoothed her free hand over her hip and up her side. “Actually, you called me a high-class sex worker. Is that any way to speak to your beloved wife?”

His gray eyes followed the movement, a muscle ticking in his jaw when she cupped her breast. “I meant it when I said you’re playing with fire.”

First Look at The Bastard's Bargain by Katee RobertThat wasn’t just anger on his face now. No, it was rapidly being overtaken by sheer lust. An answering feeling sent a bolt straight to her core. She stepped back, and he released her instantly. A strange feeling coursed through her, straightening her spine and making her want to laugh out loud. Power. This is what power feels like.

He wanted her. He wanted her so badly, he had his hands clenched at his sides to keep from touching her again. But he wouldn’t until she gave the green light. Keira took another step back. “I have a hypothetical question.”

“Ask.” His voice was rough. The way he watched her made her feel like prey, and she liked it far more than she should—because she wasn’t prey. Keira had her own teeth and claws, and Dmitri would learn that as time went on.

“Hypothetical, if I said yes tonight…how do you imagine that would go?”

He stared at her a long moment. “Nyet. I’m not playing this game with you.” She blinked and he was on her, one hand snaking around to press against the exposed small of her back, the other tangling in her hair. “We are not children, moya koroleva. These games don’t become us.”

He kissed her. There was no cautious exploration or easing into it. Dmitri kissed her like a conquering warlord who was sure of his welcome because he owned everything in the room—including her. There was no fighting this. She didn’t even want to try. Keira slid her arms around his neck and pressed herself more firmly against him. His cock was a hard length with too many layers between them. She rolled her hips, an invitation she wasn’t sure she was ready to follow through on.

Dmitri slid his hand down to cup her ass, guiding her movements. Long slides up the length of his cock and back down again. The stupid goddamn dress kept her from spreading her legs wider, from getting him exactly where she needed him. Her nipples rubbed against his shirt, the silk incredibly decadent across her sensitized skin.

“Keira. Moya koroleva.” He kissed down her jawline, tilting her head back until she had to arch her spine to accommodate the position. “Did you enjoy their eyes on you? Ivan’s. The men who owe allegiance to me. Anyone who cared to look.”

It took her desire-drugged brain a beat to catch up, but by then he was already growling out more words against her skin. “Did it make you feel powerful to know they were imagining stroking the nipples you flash with such impunity?” He moved his hand from her ass to do exactly that, dragging a finger over her puckered nipple. “They wanted the body you so proudly put on display.” His voice roughened. “They wanted what’s mine.”

Say something. If you don’t say something right now, you’re going to give in tonight and then it will all be over.

He moved his hand to her back and bent her until she relied solely on his strength to keep her off the ground. And then Dmitri’s wicked, wicked mouth closed around her nipple. The weight of the beaded design seemed heavier with his tongue flicking the engorged bud, making his touch that much hotter. She couldn’t hold back a moan as he moved to her other breast.

Dmitri dragged his mouth up the center of her chest, the only part of her not caged in the dress, stopping at the thick collar. He flicked the hollow of her throat with his tongue. “This is my favorite part of the dress.” He ran his thumb over it. “This, more than anything else, marks you as mine.”

A collar for a kept pet.

It was as if he’d doused her in icy water. Keira went rigid and shoved Dmitri away. She almost fell when he released her, but she regained her balance at the last second. They stood mere feet apart, breathing hard and staring at each other. I am no one’s pet. She slashed her hand through the air. “I might be your wife, Russian, but I’m not yours. I’ll never be yours.”
