About Star-Crossed

Only one can survive…

In a world where nutrition can be transferred via a pill, and society is split into Eaters and Non-Eaters, seventeen-year-old Princess Vela has a grave dilemma. Her father, the king, is dying, and only a transplant of organs from a healthy Non-Eater boy will save him.

Vela is tasked with choosing a boy fit to die for the king, which is impossible enough. But then Carr, the boy she’s loved all her life, emerges as the best candidate in the Bittersweet Trials. And he’s determined to win, because by doing so, he can save the life of his Non-Eater sister.

Refusing to accept losing the boy she loves, Vela bends the rules and cheats. But when someone begins to sabotage the Trials, Vela must reevaluate her own integrity—and learn the true sacrifice of becoming a ruler.

COLE GIBSEN
RISEN
Blood Eternal #1
[usr 5 img=”06.png”]

In RISEN, Charlie dreams of getting away from her life of seclusion, and the cozy cabin in the woods she shares with her aunt. Then she gets her wish, though not in the way she expects. Because Charlie’s life is turned upside down when her beloved aunt is kidnapped by vampires and her sedate life swiftly becomes much more than thought it was. And what’s more, it’s up to her to find and save her aunt. That is, if she can survive the night with the vampire who’s been ordered to kill her…

When I first heard about RISEN, I expected a vampire novel much like I’ve read in the past. It quickly became apparent, however, that this book is far beyond what I expected from it.

Excellent characterization, lush settings, thrilling danger, and stellar writing make RISEN stand out in a way that is truly unique and exciting. There are many twists and turns in this book, and all of them organic to the story and the choices each character within it makes. Which is what makes RISEN such an intriguing and enthralling read.

From the first word of this book, I knew I was in for a serious treat and I wasn’t disappointed. Nor could I put it down once I started reading it. I loved the story and the characters, and I cannot wait to read what’s in store for me as a reader when the next book in this series comes out.

If you’re looking for an intense, well-written, and thoroughly entertaining paranormal romance read, pick up a copy of RISEN by Cole Gibsen. It’s the first book in what is and promises to continue to be an exciting new vampire series.

Fans of Vampire Diaries and Twilight will be thirsting for this latest vampire addiction…

My aunt has been kidnapped by vampires, and it’s up to me to save her. Only…I had no idea vampires existed. None. Nada. I’m more of a reader than a fighter, and even though I’d been wishing to escape my boring existence in the middle of nowhere, I’d give anything to have it back now if it meant my aunt was safe.

Then there’s the vampire Sebastian, who seems slightly nicer than most of the bloodsuckers I’ve run into so far. Yes, he’s the hottest being I’ve ever come across, but there’s no way I can trust him. He swears he’s helping me get answers, but there’s more to his story. Now I’m a key pawn in a raging vampire war, and I need to pick the right ally.

But my chances of surviving this war are slim at best, when the side I choose might be the one that wants me dead the most.

BOOK EXCERPT

From RISEN:

“Don’t say it like that, Charlie. I wanted to protect you.” She tugs on the edge of my cardigan, pulling me toward her. “I love you. You’re the most important thing in my life, do you understand?”

There’s a desperation in her eyes that tightens my throat. Swallowing hard, I nod.

She lets go of me with a sigh. “Maybe I took it too far.” She sweeps her dreadlocks over her shoulder and twists them tightly. “All I’ve ever wanted was to keep you safe.”

Safe. The world spirals, cold and slippery, down my spine. “What are you so afraid of?”

She opens her mouth only to shut it again.

Jax growls.

We turn as he claws at the door.

“The only thing there is to be afraid of,” she whispers. “The monsters.”

Under a Storm-Swept Sky by Beth Anne Miller Cover Reveal

About the book

An eighty-mile trek across the rugged, stunning beauty of Scotland’s Isle of Skye isn’t something I imagined myself doing. Ever. This isn’t a trail for beginners. And I’m not a hiker.

But I have to finish it, even if it kills me. I have no choice.

With the ever-changing weather and relentless terrain, I’m in over my head.

Rory Sutherland, my guide on this adventure, is not happy. We clash with every mile, but we recognize a shared pain. Not only is the journey a struggle, but the tension between us is taut with unsaid words. And hope.

He’s broken. I’m damaged. Together, we’re about to make the perfect storm.

Zera is a Heartless—the immortal, unaging soldier of a witch. Bound to the witch Nightsinger ever since she saved her from the bandits who murdered her family, Zera longs for freedom from the woods they hide in. With her heart in a jar under Nightsinger’s control, she serves the witch unquestioningly.

Until Nightsinger asks Zera for a prince’s heart in exchange for her own, with one addendum: if she’s discovered infiltrating the court, Nightsinger will destroy Zera’s heart rather than see her tortured by the witch-hating nobles.

Crown Prince Lucien d’Malvane hates the royal court as much as it loves him—every tutor too afraid to correct him and every girl jockeying for a place at his darkly handsome side. No one can challenge him—until the arrival of Lady Zera. She’s inelegant, smart-mouthed, carefree, and out for his blood. The prince’s honor has him quickly aiming for her throat.

So begins a game of cat and mouse between a girl with nothing to lose and a boy who has it all.

Winner takes the loser’s heart.

Literally.

The Billionaire’s Unexpected Baby by Kira Archer

I just finished reading The Billionaire’s Unexpected Baby by Kira Archer and I have to say, I absolutely loved it! It was a fantastic read with two incredible lead characters and an incredibly fun supporting cast. If you haven’t picked this one up yet, check out my review of the book below.

THE BILLIONAIRE’S UNEXPECTED BABY

The Billionaire's Unexpected Baby by Kira ArcherThe Billionaire’s Unexpected Baby is the second book in author Kira Archer’s Winning the Billionaire series. I didn’t read the first book, so I can’t comment on it, but I can tell you, I fell in love with this second book. Not only is the writing style natural, with an easy to read flow that made the pages fly by, but the characters are fun, vibrant, and they live and breathe on every single page.

Brooks Larsen is a beautiful, complicated kind of hero. He’s wicked funny, can buy whatever he likes whenever he wants it, and he loves to hold people’s attention, even if there is a large part of him that believes he doesn’t deserve it.

Leah Andrews is a strong, independent woman who decided to let loose one night and wound up pregnant by a man she didn’t really know. She’s a good girl, with a heart of gold, and she’s not quite sure what a man like Brooks sees in her. Or why he’d choose to marry her when he had no real reason to do so.

Together, Brooks and Leah are a strong pairing. Their chemistry is excellent and, even with the backdrop of wealth and a fake marriage, their relationship is set firmly in reality. They are good together, and they challenge each other to be better partners. Better humans. And that’s what made them one of my favorite couples to read.

A story filled with heart, heat, and humor, The Billionaire’s Unexpected Baby is a book I found impossible to put down. Once I started reading, I didn’t stop. I loved the characters, the setting, and the storyline, and I fully plan on going back to read the first book in this series because this one was just fantastic for me. Absolutely loved it.

About Kira Archer

Kira Archer lives in Pennsylvania with her hubs and two kids. And 3 ridiculous cats. She’s one of those people who laughs at inappropriate moments (especially overly emotional occasions like weddings or funerals), and she has an insanely overactive imagination which is great when she’s writing but not so great when she’s shutting all the lights off at night and then has to go up the stairs. She has a PhD in Procrastination (or would if there was such a thing and there soooo should be because she’s seriously at expert level here). And if she’s not writing, she’s reading, or thinking about reading or writing. And running her kids around because they are busy and she’s the taxi driver. Falling in love with his fake wife was never part of the plan.

One minute, pregnant Leah Andrews is throwing up over the side of a yacht and the next, she’s married to party boy Brooks. It’s an arrangement born of sheer desperation to save her job, but now the tabloids are all over them, their friends are running a pool betting on whether they’ll actually stay married until Baby Day, and worst of all, she and her new husband might just be falling for one another. But they belong in opposite worlds. It’ll never work.

Billionaire app developer Brooks Larson lives his life on the light side. Until he tries to play hero and claims to be Leah’s husband. Now he’s up to his ears in Lamaze classes, baby powder…and unexpected marital bliss. But he’d make a rotten husband and horrible father. Leah and the baby deserve so much better. Add in major baby daddy drama and the whole situation is the worst idea EVER. But sometimes those bad ideas might just be the best ones.

Scoring with the Wrong Twin by Naima Simone (Review)

SCORING WITH THE WRONG TWIN is a sexy, passionate love story about an introverted, secret-keeping Apps designer and a hunky football star who values honesty above all else. It’s a story about what happens when secrets become lies and lies become the wedge that keeps two people from finding what—and who—they need the most.

SCORING WITH THE WRONG TWIN

2018 Top Pick Books

Scoring with the Wrong Twin by Naima SimoneSCORING WITH THE WRONG TWIN hit all the right buttons for me. Compelling characters. Engaging storyline. Easy, natural, almost effortless writing style. And an underlying truth about people and their flaws, fears, and emotional roadblocks to life and love.

Sophia Cruz is a woman who doesn’t yet know her own worth. She lacks the confidence she needs to speak up at work and as such, she holds herself back from enjoying life outside of work because she doesn’t quite know how to relate to other people. She’s smart, funny, and passionate about the things that interest her, and she couldn’t care less about the things that don’t. Or so she thought.

Deep down, Sophia has a secret desire to be as beautiful and as outgoing as her fashion model sister, and it’s that desire that leads her to agree to model in her twin sister’s place. Which is how Sophia meets Zephirin Black, a hunky tight end for the Washington Warriors.

Zeph is a proud man. He knows what it’s like to be lied to and he has no interest in becoming another person’s fool. Yet, even with the doubts and warning signs swirling around Sophia, Zeph can’t bring himself to end the sex-only relationship they’ve begun. But the more time he spends with Sophia, the more time Zeph wants to spend with her…and that’s a big problem for a man who lacks trust in people and has no interest in a serious relationship.

If you love a sexy love story with a universal truth behind it, pick up a copy of SCORING WITH THE WRONG TWIN by Naima Simone. It’s a fantastic read with beautiful characterization and universal conflicts that will keep you reading until the very last word.

She’s not who he expected, but now he can’t stop wanting her…

Shy, awkward Sophia Cruz has a hard time telling her vivacious identical twin “no.” But when her sister begs her to swap places for a modeling shoot, she caves … again. Then Zephirin Black walks onto the set. The brooding, aloof, and gorgeous tight end for the Washington Warriors. But she can keep it professional… She has to. Because the adorkable Cruz twin has no luck with guys once they compare her to her sister.

After a bad break-up, Zeph hasn’t been big on second chances—and even less with trust. But he finds himself giving please-call-me-by-my-middle-name-Sophia both. The woman he’d dismissed as a spoiled cover model is different from the first time he met her. Quirkier. Funnier. Definitely sexier. What started as one night turns into another…and another…and another…

Still, Sophia can’t go on keeping her secret from him. But telling Zeph the truth will mean losing him for good.

Sweet Attraction by Melanie Mutton

Today on Okie Dreams, we’re sharing a book review for SWEET ATTRACTION by Melanie Munton. SWEET ATTRACTION is the second book in Munton’s Slow Seductions series with Entangled Publishing, but the first book I’ve read. Since this is a new series for me, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But it turns out, there was no reason to worry.  Because I loved the story, the characters, and the author’s writing style. And even though I didn’t read the first book, I didn’t feel lost at all in reading this one at all. It’s the perfect standalone read, and I couldn’t be happier for having read it. You can read my review of the book below.

SWEET ATTRACTION

Sweet Attraction by Melanie MuntonSWEET ATTRACTION is a sexy-sweet love story about a woman in desperate need of a fresh start and a man in desperate need of a new outlook. Both Jade and Hunter seek fulfillment, and they go about getting it in very different ways. It is those parallel journeys, those different yet shared experiences, that make them three-dimensional story people. That make them both relatable and likable fictional human beings.

I liked Jade and Hunter. I didn’t always agree with them or their decisions and reactions to things that happened in the story, but I liked them. Hunter is a proud, honest man who strives to build a better life for himself and the wife and kids he wants but doesn’t yet have. He is determined to work and achieve more than he had growing up, which isn’t a bad thing but it does get in the way of him seeing and living the life he has right now.

Jade isn’t quite as complicated as Hunter, but she’s still just as deep, just as proud and flawed as he is. She’s grown up with everything she could possibly want in life, and yet, she isn’t happy, and with good reason. She wants to prove she can make it on her own, and that she can be happy in a new town, where she knows no one, but in refusing to deal with the past she left behind, she holds herself back from the happy future she seeks. And that’s a problem.

Hunter and Jade meeting was brilliant and complicated and sweet and sexy and perfect for who they are as story people. They each have things they need to fix, but it’s only in meeting each other that they get the push they need to make a real change.

If you’re looking for a romance that’s both sweet and sexy and riddled with real-world life experiences and fears, be sure to check out SWEET ATTRACTION by Melanie Munton. It’s a fun read, with a real, human kind of message. And I loved it. A lot.

My Thoughts

HAVEN is a brilliant YA paranormal romance that sweeps readers up and brings them along on an epic supernatural journey with strong but deeply flawed characters who must fight against their fears to get to the bottom of a mystery that both compels and haunts. An amazing story that takes the classic werewolf myth and expands it into something fresh and new and fascinating, HAVEN is the epitome of a must read story for mature teens.

Fantastic characterization, marvelous writing and storytelling, and a keen eye toward distinctive details all combine to make HAVEN a standout YA book and its author, Mary Lindsey, one of my favorite young adult authors writing today. Every scene, every character, every decision has a purpose in this book, and each moment builds on the last to create a unique read that I found I impossible to put down.

Rain and Freddie are two incredible characters who command your attention from the first time you meet them. You feel for them and their plight and you root for them to find the answers they need to solve the problems they’ve come to face. You want them to learn how to trust and to find the confidence they need, the strength they need, to do what they must to survive.

I loved this story, and I loved these characters, and because I loved them, I cannot recommend reading this book highly enough. If you love paranormal romance with magic, shifters, mystery, intrigue, and suspense, pick up a copy of HAVEN. You won’t be disappointed. If anything, you’ll be hooked to read more of it…just like me.

She can see the way for everyone to be their best self-if only they would make the right decisions. No one is more conflicted than her mother, and Olivia can only watch as Chairwoman Dresden chooses the dark, destructive course every time. Yet Olivia remains fiercely loyal to the woman her mother could be.

But when the chairwoman captures Ryder Russell, the striking and strong-willed boy from the rebel Underground, Olivia sees a vision of her own imminent death…at Ryder’s hand. Despite her bleak fate, she rescues Ryder and flees with him, drawing her mother’s fury and sparking a romance as doomed as Olivia herself. As the full extent of Chairwoman Dresden’s gruesome plan is revealed, Olivia must find the courage to live in the present-and stop her mother before she destroys the world.

SEIZE TODAY Review

Seize Today is the final book in author Pintip Dunn’s Forget Tomorrow series. It’s a powerful story with an even more powerful message. Love. Family. Sacrifice. Courage. Forgiveness. Five incredible themes that are expertly woven throughout the series, but even more so, throughout Dunn’s latest release, Seize Today.

Deep, engaging characterization combined with an intriguing, gripping, and unique storyline make Seize Today one of the best books I’ve read all year. Olivia Dresden is stronger than she knows and braver than she thinks, and her love for humanity goes far deeper than anyone would suspect. Ryder Russell is far more cynical, and with good reason, but he has no desire to ever see his troubling future memory come to pass. And he’ll do whatever he has to do to keep his family safe, even if it means trusting someone he isn’t sure he should.

This book is such a phenomenal read. The characterization and writing are so fantastic that from the moment I started reading, I was hooked. Riveted, in fact. It’s a brilliant story and the perfect end to an incredible and unforgettable sci-fi romance series. I could go on for days about all the different strands and dazzling little nuggets contained within this book, but I have a strict policy not to write spoilers in my reviews and I have never come closer to wanting to break that policy than I do writing this review. But I won’t. Because I firmly believe that people should be able to discover incredible reads as they read and that’s never been more true than it is with this book.

If you love young adult sci-fi romance, if you love dystopian and time travel, Seize Today and the entire Forget Tomorrow series is an incredibly well-written, well-thought-out story journey that will transport you to another time, another world, where anything is possible…and the consequences of making the wrong choice could—and often do—prove deadly.

Book Excerpt

From SEIZE TODAY:

Eleven years earlier…

I pull the lever of the cage, switching the tunnel onto a different track, trying to confuse the mice.

I know exactly how the future will play out, of course. I know which mice will fall down the trap and which ones will smack into the see-through glass wall. I know which mice will get hopelessly lost. I even know which ones will run the maze correctly on the very first try.

I like watching them anyway. They wriggle over one another like worms, and their whiskers twitch when they’re at a corner between two paths. But what I like most is how they come to me when I call.

Picking up a mouse, I run my fingers over its soft fur and warm body. It looks at me with unblinking pink eyes, and I think it could be my friend.

Of course, I can see which mice will come, so I know which ones to call. Rodents are predictable like that. Humans, not so much. They have too many wants, too many feelings. I don’t see any one future for people. Rather, I see them all—every single pathway their futures might take, flickering before my eyes.

So I have to guess which of my human classmates will want to play with me. Most of the time, I guess wrong.

“Are you bothering my mice again?” a little boy’s voice says. “Fates, Livvy. How many times do I have to tell you? Leave them alone!”

Startled, I let go of the mouse and look up at Tanner Callahan, the other six-year-old who hangs around the scientists’ labs. I’m here because my mom’s the head of the Future Memory Agency, or FuMA, and he’s here…I guess ’cause he has nowhere else to be.

He’s got black hair that pokes up in the back, and his skin sticks too closely to his bones. I thought this meant he wasn’t eating enough, but MK, our child-minder, said that grief over his parents’ deaths had burrowed holes through his resources.

This makes me think of the mice digging through the straw, and my chest aches. I flash forward to his futures. He still has hundreds of branches remaining, but in most of them, one thing is the same: he will be sad and lonely until he kisses our classmate Jessa ten years in the future.

I don’t know why kissing should change anything. But I do know how it feels to be lonely and sad.

We don’t have to be like this. I could be his friend. I just have to figure out the right thing to say.

“Jessa and I are going to rule the world one day.” It can’t hurt to bring up the girl he smushes lips with. Maybe if he thinks she and I are friends, he’ll like me, too. “You know Jessa, right? The girl with the teardrop eyes? She’s my best friend.” Not true. I think Jessa only talks to me because she’s nice. But he doesn’t have to know that.

“Oh yeah? Well someday, I’m going to be the inventor of future memory,” he shoots back. “And then we’ll see who’s more important.”

I bite my lip. That wasn’t what I meant. I wasn’t trying to brag or compare or compete. The futures containing our friendship begin to fall away, one by one. I guessed wrong once again.

Q & A Interview

Can you tell us about yourself and your current release?

Pintip: I grew up in a small town in Kansas, and I got my B.A. at Harvard University and my J.D. at Yale Law School. I’m a lawyer turned stay-at-home-mom turned author. I have three kids, and I write in two genres of YA fiction — science fiction and contemporary thriller. I have five novels published and three more coming…and I’ve written my last six books on my cell phone! (I’m physically unable to type on a keyboard due to my fibromyalgia!)

Interview with Pintip Dunn, author of Seize Today

My current release is SEIZE TODAY, which is the third — and final! — book in my Forget Tomorrow series. This series is about a future world where memories can be sent back in time to your younger self. In the first book, FORGET TOMORROW, my heroine Callie sees a vision of the unthinkable — her not-so-distant future self killing her beloved younger sister. Book 2, REMEMBER YESTERDAY, follows that sister, Jessa, as she tries to change the past and involves lots of time travel fun. This book features Olivia, the only true precognitive of her time, as she faces off against her mother, Chairwoman Dresden, the seemingly evil leader of the governing agency, as the fate of the entire world hangs in the balance.

I am so excited to share the culmination of this story with my readers. I hope they love Olivia and Ryder as much as I do!

What have you learned most in the process of writing the Forget Tomorrow book series?

Pintip: I think I learned to write from the heart. Let me explain. I am always playing with my writing process, from being a total pantser to experimenting with being a plotter. Through writing these books, I came to understand that my best writing emerged from those moments that aren’t previously planned. Rather, they came from flashes of insight or the characters speaking to me while I wrote. Thus, I am now a plantser, which means that while I will plot out the big turning points beforehand, I try to let my characters guide me as much as possible.

How do you feel your writing process has changed from the first book to this newest release?

Pintip: Ha. Well, it’s much shorter, for one. While it used to take me over a year to write a book, I can now complete a manuscript in four months. My writing process changes from book to book, as I alluded to above, and I am always experimenting with new ways of writing. But overall, I think I approach the page with much more confidence. I have a much better understanding of craft, which means less revisions. And now, I trust that I’ll be able to complete a new book. It’s really just a matter of hours spent in the chair!

What is your favorite thing about the writing process? Brainstorming? Creation? Finished product?

Pintip: I love the writing itself — that slow crafting of prose to convey exactly what I’m trying to say. Even though my process differs depending on the book, I tend to fast draft the entire story first, and then story board to work out the kinks of the plot, and then I throw the entire “zero draft” away (it’s not good enough to be called a “first draft”!). I then rewrite the entire manuscript, slowly, really paying attention to the words. This stage is my favorite part of the process. And then, when I finish, I revise to the best of my ability, and then it goes to critique partners, my agent, or my editor.

What is the most inspiring research discovery you’ve had since developing this series?

Pintip: I mostly researched this series by reading books about time travel and brainstorming with my scientist friends. I think my favorite idea that we came up with is the idea of asynchronicity as a disease that affects one of my characters — her body and her mind are out of time with one another. Specifically, while her body is present in our time, her mind is zooming around in different time periods. In order to bring her fully back to the present, they must realign her body and her mind so that they exist in the same time.

When and how did you learn that language had power?

Pintip: I think I always knew this. I’ve wanted to be an author ever since I was six years old, and as soon as I could read, words had the power to transport me to these completely different magical worlds. In the worlds of the books I read, I was loved and I was accepted. I learned about the person I was meant to be. Eventually, the girl that was born inside these books crossed over into the real world and became me.

If you could tell your younger writing self one thing what would it be and why?

Pintip: This is an interesting question because this is precisely how the Forget Tomorrow series came about! I had been lamenting my copious amount of rejections to an editor-friend of mine, and she said, “I wish I had a crystal ball. Then I could tell you that five years from now, you would be a publisher author, and then you wouldn’t waste so much time worrying about it!”

The next day, I was thinking about her words and wishing my future self could send me a memory of how my life would look. My next thought was: “Hey, that would make a pretty cool idea for a book!” And presto! The Forget Tomorrow series was born.

If I could tell my younger self anything, I would tell her to persevere. If I could motivate her by showing her a memory, I would share with her the moment that Nora Roberts (one of my writing idols) presented me with a RITA for Best First Book. I think more than anything else, that would convince her to stay the course, no matter how long or bumpy!

Thank you so much for being here today, Pintip! We loved chatting with you about SEIZE TODAY and the FORGET TOMORROW series and getting to know more about your writing process and thoughts.

Exclusive Excerpt!

When Rain turned back to Freddie, he bit down a gasp of surprise. She’d stripped off her shirt and tipped her face to the moon, eyes closed, like one would do to the sun at the beach. And here he’d thought the landscape was the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen.

The air was still. Eerily still, and her smooth skin appeared to glow from inside in the moonlight—her black lace bra sheer enough to make him a little dizzy.

Without opening her eyes, she said, “Take off your shirt.”

No way in hell was he going to argue with that. He yanked off his shirt, clutching it in his fist, waiting for his next instruction.

He forgot how to breathe when she opened her pale eyes and moved toward him. Her gaze wasn’t focused on his face, though. It was on his chest. Stopping in front of him, she traced her fingers over the ink.

“Raindrops?” she asked, finger outlining one of the shapes.

“Tears,” he replied, again light-headed as she ran her fingertips over his pec.

“For your mom?”

“No. For all of us.”

She stepped back and, for a long time, stared at the tattoo comprised of dozens of drops in a random pattern over his chest, spilling down his ribs.

She traced a scar on his side with the tip of her finger. One of many marring his body from fights. “Your life has been sad.”

And so had hers recently. Maybe that was why he felt so connected to her. Their shared grief, their shared stand against a harsh, unfeeling, screwed-up world. Their shared solitude.

She turned back to the moon and raised her arms. “Do you feel it?”

Well, that was a wide-open question. He was feeling lots of things.

“The moon,” she said. “It’s like aloe when you’re sunburned. Try it.”

He imitated her posture, head back, arms out, but felt nothing other than the throbbing hardness he always felt around her.

“So, what do you think about that legend your aunt told you?” she asked.

He opened his eyes to find her studying him. “That the rock can turn men into beasts?” His mind raced, wondering what would prompt that question and what answer she was looking for. Men were beasts. Horrible monsters at times. He’d seen it firsthand. “I believe we all hide a beast inside. The only difference is what form it takes when freed.”

There it was again. That strange warm pull in his chest while she studied him. Like she totally got him—something no one else had ever bothered to do. He’d never been understood or accepted. People saw his size and found out his background and immediately wrote him off as dangerous or not worth the trouble. Not Freddie.

She obviously found his answer acceptable, because she wound her fingers in his hair and hauled him against her for another kiss. Raw, open-mouthed, and hungry. He’d never met anyone like
this, who made him burn so hot he thought he might die from need. Recovering from surprise, he placed his hands on either side of her bare rib cage, feeling her body expand and contract with each quick breath. Bones and hard muscle working beneath smooth, soft skin. Skin he wanted to touch all over.

“I like you, Rain Ryland,” she said, dragging her nails down his back.

“Like” didn’t even come close. He was on fire for her. Had thought of her night and day since he first saw those eerily pale eyes and badass attitude. She was smart, strong, and terribly, terribly dangerous, which turned him on like crazy. “I like you, too.”

“How much?”

Something was going on here. Something other than foreplay. “More than I’ve ever liked anyone.” Which was true and unexpected. This was more than physical, which was a terrifying thought for
him. Maybe this time he could stay. Maybe this time he’d actually found a home and wouldn’t have to leave everything behind.

He kissed her again, not wanting to think about legends, or leaving, or anything else for that matter. He wanted to just live in this moment as long as it lasted. Running his hands lower, his thumb brushed the unmistakable shape of a condom in her back pocket. He froze, and she smiled against his lips.

“You scared, Sprinkles?”

“Yes.”

“Of me?” It was like she wanted him to fear her.

“No.” He pulled back, amazed at how her eyes reflected the moon like clear glass. “Of this.” He gestured to the space he’d put between them. “Of whatever this is.” The intensity of it. The urgency.
And worse, much worse—the potential loss of it. He’d never feared losing something before because he’d never had anything worth keeping. This girl, though. She was different. And he wanted her.
