10 Harlequin Temptation Reads for Throwback Thursday

10 Harlequin Temptation Reads for Throwback Thursday

As a reader, one of the saddest days I’ve had was the day Harlequin decided to close the Temptation line. So many of my favorite authors came from that line and I devoured the books each and every month. I loved the books so much, I still have over a hundred of them sitting on my keeper shelf and I can still name the title, author, and plot of a few dozen of them.

Here are 10 of my favorite Harlequin Temptation reads, in no particular order.

Santa in a Stetson

by Vicki Lewis Thompson

IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT

Santa never looked so good!

Jo Cassidy had always had a weakness for cowboys—especially strapping, sexy devils like Russ Gibson. In one short night, he’d done more than make her weak—he’d loved every inch of her…and then walked out. That was it for Jo. Slipping a ring on her finger, she decided to invent a husband. The next time a gorgeous cowpoke crossed her path, she’d be unavailable.

But then Russ showed up on her doorstep Christmas Eve, needing her help. Throughout the snowy, magical night, Jo and Russ found themselves falling in love. But Jo’s strategy for self-preservation had worked too well. Because no matter what she said, Russ still believed Jo was somebody else’s wife….

Constant Craving

by  Tori Carrington

Adam Grayson, undercover FBI agent extraordinaire, had never hated an assignment so much–or wanted a woman so badly. His new supervisor, Eva Burgess, had quickly become a prominent player in his favorite fantasy. Not that he had any chance with her–his cover as a geeky accountant pretty well shot down any possibilities there. Then she propositioned him…

Alone and expecting, Eva needed to find a husband…at least a temporary one. And with Adam she was certain she’d have no trouble ending the charade. But she hadn’t expected Adam to be so compelling, so sexy…so male. Nor did she guess that she’d start to crave their moments together with a need that took her breath away.

The Heartbreak Kid

by Alison Kent

Electrician Sophie North felt as if she’d touched a live wire the first time she laid eyes on Tyler Barnes. Hardly unexpected. He had a heartbreaking grin, an incredible body, and a thousand watts of cowboy charm. Half the single women in Brodie, Texas, were out to snag him now that he was setting up his veterinary practice.

But Sophie was just passing through. And she’d sworn never to live her life at the mercy of her own passionate nature—not after passion had destroyed her chance for a real family. Nevertheless, every time Tyler came near her response was shocking. Which wasn’t supposed to be happening. Lightning was only supposed to strike once!

Learning Curves

by Joanne Rock

Graduate student Madeline Watson can’t believe the university rejected her human-mating-rituals study, hinting a good girl like her can’t handle the racy subject. With his expert instruction, she’ll learn the finer points of desire… and how much fun it is being bad.

Mechanic-turned-teacher Cal has to shake a reputation that’s been a lifetime in the making. Which means he can’t risk a public fling with Maddy… and he can’t refuse her oh-so-tempting offer. Scandalized!

by Lori Foster

Tony Austin had no desire for a wife, but he longed for a baby of his own. What he needed was someone to carry the child and then vanish from his life.

Lost and Found Sisters
Wildstone #1
[usr 5 img=”06.png”]

I have been an avid reader of Jill Shalvis’s work since her first Harlequin release came out years ago. I have loved every book I’ve read of hers to date, but this one? This one is my favorite. This one is special. I can’t decide if it’s the depth of character and story or the writing style on whole, or a combination thereof, but from the second I started reading Lost and Found Sisters, I was one hundred percent hooked. Reading to the end became an obsession, as page after enjoyable page flew by.

Compelling, easy to read, fast-paced, and heartfelt, Lost and Found Sisterstakes readers on an unforgettable journey into the heart and mind of a young woman who has lost sight of herself amid the grief that surrounds her. Emotional, witty, sexy, and endearing, this book will sweep readers away with it’s beautiful charm and touching romance. It has everything contemporary romance readers love in their stories, plus a whole lot more.

If you’re looking for a great book to escape into and possibly discuss with your friends, Lost and Found Sisters is definitely the book for you. It’s an amazing read by a highly skilled author who writes with both heart and realism. The kind of book that stays with you, long after you finish the final page.

And what’s more? It’s only the first book in Shalvis’s brand new Wildstone series and the bar is set high for what’s to come next. Personally, I cannot wait.

BOOK REVIEW

JILL SHALVIS
The Good Luck Sister
Wildstone #1.5
[usr 5 img=”06.png”]

I really enjoyed Tilly and Dylan’s story. I had a massive soft spot for both of these characters after reading the first book, Lost & Found Sisters, so it was great to re-meet them here, a little older, a little wiser, but no less bruised inside.

Ten years ago, Tilly dreamed of being an artist and now she’s working to make that happen, despite feeling like she isn’t quite there yet. She’s teaching and though she’s fighting nerves and self-doubt, she’s also doing something she loves and wants to stay good at. Seeing Dylan in her class throws her, but she also can’t seem to stay away from him.

Dylan left Wildstone and Tilly behind because he felt it was what he needed to do. He joined the military and learned to fly, though he fell short of his dream of becoming an Astronaut. But now he’s back in Wildstone, co-owner of a helicopter tour company, and though he initially planned to stay away from Tilly, he soon realized he couldn’t actually do it.

If you’re looking for a sweet, feel-good reunion romance that also packs an emotional punch, pick up a copy of The Good Luck Sister by Jill Shalvis. It’s a short, fast-paced read but it sure does cover a lot of beautiful and necessary ground. This is also one of those stories that hits you right in the feels and leaves you with a fully satisfied sigh.

Excellent characterization. Beautiful, emotional love story. One fantastic read.

Dylan knows he should’ve left well enough alone, but when he sees Tilly living her dream, he can’t help but make contact. Ten years ago, he left Wildstone and everything in it behind, including Tilly. He had his reasons, but now he wants her back in his life, anyway he can get her.

BOOK EXCERPT

From THE GOOD LUCK SISTER by Jill Shalvis

Chapter 1

“I’ve finished my free trial of adulthood and am no longer interested, so please cancel my subscription.” From The Mixed Up Files of Tilly’s journal.

Tilly Adams sat in the vet’s office staring at the doctor in shock. “Say that again?”

Dr. Janet Lyons smiled. “I think Leo faked being sick. Probably so you’d stay home from work today.”

Tilly looked down at Leo. “You do know he’s a dog, right?”

All six pounds of him smiled up at her. About a month ago, she found him on a street corner hiding beneath a bus bench; wet, dirty, cold, hungry and matted. He’d been Dobby meets Gremlin meets neglected, abused Care Bear. Tilly had looked around for an adult, and then had to remind herself that at twenty-five years old, she was legal herself. So then she’d searched for an adultier adult, but she’d been the only one in sight.

So she’d scooped the little guy up and had brought him to the SPCA, who’d said he was about five weeks old, a possible Maltipoo, which meant he came by his care bear look naturally. He was malnutritioned and suffering from mange. They’d said they’d do what they could, and Tilly had turned to go. That had been when she’d seen all the eyes on her from an endless row of cages … and she’d realized her care bear would soon be sitting in one too. Then she’d heard herself offer to foster him until they found him a forever home.

They’d found him one too. Tilly had signed the adoption papers last weekend in spite of the fact that just that morning he’d escaped his crate, eaten her favorite sneakers, destroyed her favorite pillow, and then yakked up the stuffing from the pillow.

He was a destructo of the highest magnitude, and something else too. He had no idea how small he was. He went after her sister Quinn’s twenty-plus pound cat and her neighbor’s hundred pound black lab with the same fierce, fearless gusto. Turned out, the little guy had a bad case of small-man syndrome, which was how he’d earned his name.

            Leo, short for Napoleon.

And now on top of Leo’s impressive chewing skills, his escape artist skills, and his ability to get up on her bed and yet still not understand why stepping in his own poop was annoying, he had a new skill.

            He’d faked being sick.

Proud of himself, Leo smiled up at her. Smiled. An hour ago he’d been coughing and limping and acting all sorts of odd. Now he just kept smiling up at her while sending her meaningful glances at the open dog biscuit bin between her and the doctor.

Dr. Lyons laughed and gave him one.

“Dogs can’t fake sick,” Tilly said while Leo inhaled the biscuit whole before licking the floor to make sure he got all the crumbs. “Can they?”

Dr. Lyons scooped him up and gave him a kiss on his adorable snout. “Yours did.”

Tilly sighed. It was too early for this.

She’d had a crazy late night. Not hanging at Whiskey River, the local bar and grill. Not at a club with friends. Not working on her designs for the upcoming graphic art showing.

Nope, she’d been on a serious stress bender — a marathon of Game Of Thrones. She hadn’t fallen asleep until after two and her alarm had interrupted her in the middle of a really great dream starring Jon Snow.

Dr. Lyons handed Leo over. He immediately snuggled into the crook of Tilly’s neck and dammit, her cold heart melted on the spot and she hugged him close. “You’re sure he’s okay? He was coughing. And then he limped funny. And then he wouldn’t eat.”

“But he hasn’t coughed once that I’ve seen. And he’s not limping either. And you said all his food vanished while you took a quick shower.”

            “Yes,” Tilly said.

Dr. Lyons waited for her to catch up.

Tilly sighed. “He really did fake me out.”

About That Kiss by Jill Shalvis

Today on Okie Dreams, we have a book review for ABOUT THAT KISS by Jill Shalvis. ABOUT THAT KISS is the fifth book in Shalvis’s Heartbreaker Bay series but it can be read as a standalone.

About That Kiss

Jill Shalvis

I love how every single character in the Heartbreaker Bay series has a distinct personality, with distinct fears and flaws to overcome. And each time I read about a couple, I think Jill Shalvis can’t possibly top them being my favorite…and then somehow, she totally does.

Kylie and Joe are amazing together! Adorable, endearing, and so, so sweet. They both have their flaws and their idiosyncrasies, of course, but underneath all that, they’re truly good people who have experienced some really bad things in their lives. They get each other, and that’s what truly binds them together in ways neither one of them expected.

Joe is someone Kylie both wants and tells herself she can’t have. He’s “wrong” for her, and yet, she can’t seem to stop from wanting him. Kylie is someone Joe has wanted for a while, but deep down believes deserves better than he could ever give her. He’s tough, protective, and a has a beautiful heart and a great sense of humor. Which is a really good thing because Kylie is quite the character—truly a larger than life heroine who I would totally befriend.

If you’re looking for a dynamite contemporary romance with a charming heroine and a kick-butt hero, pick up a copy of About that Kiss by Jill Shalvis! It’s a swoon-worthy romance that, if you’re anything like me, will be impossible to put down.

5 Stars

Book Excerpt

From ABOUT THAT KISS:

Joe studied her. “I asked you once before, but now I’m going to ask you again. Is there something going on between you two?”

She tossed up her hands. “Why do you both keep asking me that about each other?”

His eyes narrowed. “I thought nothing was going on.”

“And before today, I could’ve passed a lie detector test on that,” she said.

“What happened today?”

She paused. Not because she had anything to be ashamed of, but because she wasn’t quite sure what had happened.

“Kylie.”

She sighed. “It’s nothing.”

“Try again,” Joe said and gave her the very male universal go on gesture.

She rolled her eyes. “Fine. He . . . finally made a move on me.”

Joe didn’t budge. Not a blink, not a muscle twitch, nothing, but she could’ve popped corn off the electric tension coming off him.

“Describe ‘made a move,’ ” he finally said.

She crossed her arms. “And again, how is this relevant to my case?”

He just gave her that careful stare again and she thought wow, those eyes of his should be registered as a lethal weapon, because she found herself opening her mouth and spilling her guts. “He kissed me.”

“He kissed you.”

“Yeah,” she said. “Do you know that you often repeat what I say?”

“What kind of a kiss?” he asked.

She was momentarily bewildered. “I don’t know. It was a kiss. A normal kiss. A nice kiss.” She cocked her head at him. “How many kinds of kisses are there?”

He just looked at her for a long moment before coming toward her. He backed her to the wall and pressed his big hands on either side of her head.

“There are many kinds of kisses,” he said.

Her breath had backed up in her throat, where her heart had lodged, pounding wildly. “S-s-such as?”

“Such as this one.” And then he leaned in and covered her mouth with his.

At the touch of Joe’s mouth, Kylie’s brain stopped being capable of rational thought. His tongue gave a knee-weakening stroke against hers and she let out a shockingly needy moan as she clutched at him, fisting her hands in the material of his shirt at his chest. Only when he’d thoroughly plundered and pillaged and left her boneless did he lift his head and look into her eyes.

“Wow,” she whispered, fully aware she was still holding on to him like he was a lifeline, but the bones in her legs had liquefied. “I mean . . .” She shook her head. “Wow.”

He nodded. “Yeah. So to be clear, that wasn’t ‘a normal kiss’ or even ‘a nice kiss.’ It was a ‘wow’ kiss. Any questions?”

“Just one,” she said softly. “Can I have another?”

Joe didn’t have to be asked twice. His mouth immediately descended again, his fingers sliding into her hair to change the angle of the kiss to suit him. It was a controlled, alpha thing to do, but she had only one thought—nothing about the usually carefully, purposely leashed Joe was in control at the moment.

And she liked it.

She had no idea how long they went at it because she was in absolute heaven. Who knew that the man could use his preferred silent mode to communicate in a way that she finally approved of?

Only when she was completely breathless and about to strip him down to his birthday suit did she manage to pull back.

“Any more questions?” he asked, also a little bit breathless, which was more than slightly gratifying. Dumbly, she shook her head. His eyes softened and he gently he stroked his thumb over her bottom lip. “And FYI? Gib’s an idiot.”

ABOUT HOLIDAY WISHES

It’s Christmastime again in Heartbreaker Bay!

When Sean O’Riley shows up at the Hartford Bed & Breakfast for his older brother’s bachelor weekend, he’s just hoping to make it through the weekend. What he’s not expecting is to come face to face with the woman he lost his virginity to a decade ago—a woman he’s never really forgotten.

The last time Lotti Hartford saw Sean, she told him she loved him while he said nothing. Now, ten years later, she’s just looking for a good time. For once, she wants to be the wild and free one, and Sean – the good time guy – is the perfect candidate.

But as the weekend continues, Sean realizes that after a lifetime of being the hook-up king, he’s ready to find happily-ever-after, and he wants it with Lotti. But will she open her heart to him again? As Christmas sweeps through the little B&B, he can only hope love and magic are in the air.

My Thoughts

Holiday Wishes is a compelling, fast-paced, emotionally satisfying, second chance romance where two lonely hearts find their way back to one another…this time as adults. B & B Owner Lotti Hartford is understandably standoffish when her old high school flame Sean O’Riley unexpectedly waltzes back into her life, but she can’t deny the attraction between them miraculously still exists. Nor can Lotti deny herself the chance to physically explore things with Sean now.

Sean is the kind of second chance hero I love to read about…charming, flirtatious, a little bit wicked, and a whole lot determined. And Lotti is every bit this charming hero’s perfect female counterpoint, having every reason in the world to doubt his intentions toward her. But even as part of Lotti doubts Sean’s newly changed persona, she does see the good in him, and she finds herself intrigued and more than a little bit turned on because of it. Of course, Sean isn’t the only one who has changed since high school. Lotti has changed, too, and where once she might’ve been the girl with stars in her eyes, now she’s a woman who has learned to keep her distance. And with good reason…right?

Beautiful, sweet, heartwarming, and endearing, Holiday Wishes by Jill Shalvis is the perfect holiday read. It’s short, but not so short that the story or the characters suffer for it. On the contrary, Shalvis manages to pack a lot into this little holiday tale…and all of it is fantastic to follow along with on the page. And the best part of all? This short novella features characters from all the previous Heartbreaker Bay releases, but not in a way that new readers will get lost by reading this one first. So even if you haven’t read Jill Shalvis or the Heartbreaker Bay series before, you can still pick up this book and enjoy it without feeling like you’re missing something.

And for those of you who have read the Heartbreaker Bay series, you will surely love this book. Sean and Lotti are the perfect together, and their story is totally, one-hundred and ten percent, sigh-worthy. And probably my favorite to date of the Heartbreaker Bay novellas.

5 “Must Read” Stars

Book Excerpt

From HOLIDAY WISHES:

At the empathetic tone in Sean’s voice, Lotti’s heart and stomach and head all clenched in unison. “What do you mean you can’t give me what I want?” she asked. “All you have to do is walk away.”

“Tried that already,” he said. “And it was the biggest mistake of my life.” He brought her hand up to his mouth and met her gaze over their entwined hands.

He was looking at her like . . . well, she wasn’t sure what was going on in his head, but her thoughts were racing along with her pulse.

“You’re incredible, Lotti. I hope you know that.” Very slowly, clearly giving her time to object, he pulled her into him.

Her breath caught at the connection and his eyes heated in response as he slid a hand up her spine and then back down again, pressing her in tight to him from chest to thighs and everywhere in between. His nose was cold at the crook of her neck, but his breath was warm against her skin. She felt his lips press against the sensitive spot just behind her ear and she shivered. “You’re trembling,” he said, his voice low. “Are you cold?”

“No,” she whispered. Try the opposite of cold . . .

“Nervous?”

“No.” Not even close. The way his mouth moved across her skin was making her warm all over. Not that she could articulate that with his body pressed to hers and his fingers dancing over her skin. She was literally quivering as the memories of what it felt like to be touched by him washed over her, as if no time at all had gone by.

Yes, she’d let him think that their time together had sucked for her. But it hadn’t. Not even close. That long-ago night he’d evoked feelings and a hunger in her that she’d never forgotten. “I’ve just had a long day,” she said.

“I know. I’m going to make it better.” He pressed a kiss at the juncture of her jaw and ear before he made his way to her lips for a slow, hot kiss, his mouth both familiar and yet somehow brand-new. She was so far gone that when he pulled back she protested with a moan, but he held her tight, staring down at her with heated eyes. “Just checking,” he murmured.

“Checking what?”

“That you want this as badly as I do.”

ABOUT CHASING CHRISTMAS EVE

Meet cute…

Run for the hills—temporarily. That’s Colbie Albright’s plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbie’s so over it that she’s under it. She’s also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But she’s pretty sure Spencer Baldwin won’t be a stranger for long.

Make merry…

Spence’s commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesn’t have to worry about the powerful—okay, crazy hot—chemistry he’s got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself… just because she’s gorgeous and a great listener…just because she “gets” Spence immediately doesn’t mean he won’t be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

…and hope for a miracle.

Now the clock’s ticking for Colbie and Spence: Two weeks to cut loose. Two weeks to fall hard. Two weeks to figure out how to make this Christmas last a lifetime.

Chasing Christmas Eve Review

Man, the Heartbreaker Bay series just gets better and better with every book. Here in book four, we have Spence, resident genius and wealthy bachelor, and Colbie, a bestselling YA-fantasy author who is ready to crack under all the pressure weighing on her.

Like with all Jill Shalvis’ stories, CHASING CHRISTMAS EVE is filled with good humor, fantastic characters, and fun, flirty, sexy, heartwarming romance. Spence and Colbie meet in the cutest way and their quirky natures creates a memorable moment for both them and the reader. They each have their issues, of course, and their secrets. But beneath their insecurities and need for privacy, Spence and Colbie fit together in ways that surprise them both.

Charming, compelling, and fun, CHASING CHRISTMAS EVE is the perfect fall read and the perfect precursor for the upcoming holiday season. Well-written, with intelligent and witty dialogue, Shalvis creates a satisfying romance story that only furthers her readers’ love for the small San Francisco community of Cow Hollow and the entertaining, intriguing cast of characters who inhabit it.

I loved this book and I love this series. Absolutely cannot wait for the next one!

Book Excerpt

From CHASING CHRISTMAS EVE:

At the unexpected sight of Spence, Colbie startled hard. How was it that he was the one who needed glasses and yet she’d not seen him standing against the window? “No, I don’t kill a lot of people,” she said cautiously because she was wearing only a towel in front of a strange man. “But I’m happy to make an exception.”

He laughed, a rough rumble that was more than a little contagious but she controlled herself because, hello, she was once again dripping wet before the man who seemed to make her knees forget to hold her up.

“I didn’t mean to scare you,” he said and pushed off the wall to come close.

She froze, but he held up his hands like, I come in peace, and crouched at her feet to scoop up the clothes she hadn’t realized she’d dropped.

Leggings, a long forgiving tee, and the peach silk bra-and-panty set that hadn’t gotten so much as a blink from the TSA guy.

But it got one out of Spence. He also swallowed hard as she snatched them back from him.

“Hold on,” he said and caught her arm, pulling it toward him to look at her bleeding elbow.

“Sit,” he said and gently pushed her down to a weight bench. He vanished into the bathroom and came back out with a first aid kit.

It took him less than two minutes to clean and bandage the scrape. Then, easily balanced at her side on the balls of his feet, he did the same for both her knees, which she hadn’t noticed were also scraped up.

“You must’ve hit the brick coping as you fell in the fountain,” he said and let his thumb slide over the skin just above one bandaged knee.

She shivered, and not from the cold either. “Not going to kiss it better?” she heard herself ask before biting her tongue for running away with her good sense.

She’d raised her younger twin brothers. Scrappy, roughhouse wild animals, the both of them, so there’d been plenty of injuries she’d kissed over the years.

But no one had ever kissed hers. Not surprising, since most of her injuries tended to be on the inside, where they didn’t show. Still, she was horrified she’d said anything at all. “I didn’t mean—”

She broke off, frozen like a deer in the headlights as Spence slowly lowered his head, brushing his lips over the Band-Aid on her elbow, then her knees. When he lifted his head, he pushed his glasses higher on his nose, those whiskey eyes warm and amused behind his lenses. “Better?”

Shockingly better. Since she didn’t quite trust her voice at the moment, she gave a jerky nod and took her clothes back into the bathroom. She shut the door and then leaned against it, letting out a slow, deliberate breath. Holy cow, she was out of her league. He was somehow both cute and hot, and those glasses . . .

Lost and Found Sisters

Jill Shalvis

Wildstone #1

Women’s Fiction

William Morrow

June 20th 2017

From New York Times bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes her first women’s fiction novel—an unforgettable story of friendship, love, family, and sisterhood—perfect for fans of Colleen Hoover, Susan Mallery, and Kristan Higgins.

They say life can change in an instant…

After losing her sister in a devastating car accident, chef Quinn Weller is finally getting her life back on track. She appears to have it all: a loving family, a dream job in one of L.A.’s hottest eateries, and a gorgeous boyfriend dying to slip an engagement ring on her finger. So why does she feel so empty, like she’s looking for a missing piece she can’t find?

The answer comes when a lawyer tracks down Quinn and reveals a bombshell secret and a mysterious inheritance that only she can claim. This shocking revelation washes over Quinn like a tidal wave. Her whole life has been a lie.

On impulse, Quinn gives up her job, home, and boyfriend. She heads up the coast to the small hometown of Wildstone, California, which is just a few hours north, but feels worlds apart from Los Angeles. Though she doesn’t quite fit in right away, she can’t help but be drawn to the town’s simple pleasures…and the handsome, dark-haired stranger who offers friendship with no questions asked.

As Quinn settles into Wildstone, she discovers there’s another surprise in store for her. The inheritance isn’t a house or money, but rather something earthshattering, something that will make her question everything she thought she knew about herself, about her family. Now with a world of possibilities opening up to Quinn, she must decide if this new life is the one she was always meant to have—and the one that could finally give her the fulfillment she’s searched so long for.

If she has her way . . .

Willa Davis is wrangling puppies when Keane Winters stalks into her pet shop with frustration in his chocolate-brown eyes and a pink bedazzled cat carrier in his hand. He needs a kitty sitter, stat. But the last thing Willa needs is to rescue a guy who doesn’t even remember her . . .

He’ll get nothing but coal in his stocking.

Saddled with his great-aunt’s Feline from Hell, Keane is desperate to leave her in someone else’s capable hands. But in spite of the fact that he’s sure he’s never seen the drop-dead-gorgeous pet shop owner before, she seems to be mad at him . . .

Unless he tempers “naughty” with a special kind of nice . . .

Willa can’t deny that Keane’s changed since high school: he’s less arrogant, for one thing—but can she trust him not to break her heart again? It’s time to throw a coin in the fountain, make a Christmas wish—and let the mistletoe do its work . . .

Excerpt from ACCIDENTALLY ON PURPOSE:

His hand caught her, long fingers wrapping around her elbow and causing all sorts of unwelcome sensations as he pulled her back around.

“What?” she asked.

“Waiting for my apology.”

“Sure,” she said agreeably. “When hell freezes over.” She lifted her chin, grateful for her four-inch heels so that she could almost, kind of, not quite look him in the eyes. “I’m in charge of this building, Archer, which means I’m in charge of everything that happens in it. I’m also in charge of everyone who works for this building.”

He cocked his head, looking amused again. “You want to be the boss of me, Elle?” he asked softly.

I am the boss of you.”

Now he outright smiled and her breath caught. Damn, stupid, sexy smile. And then there was The Body. Yes, she thought of it in capital letters, it deserved the respect. “If you don’t want to be walking funny tomorrow,” she said, “you’ll stop invading my personal-space bubble.”

Complete bravado and they both knew it. She’d only been at this job for a year and it’d come as a surprise to her that he’d been in the building at all. An unfortunate coincidence. Before that it’d been years since they’d had any contact, but she still knew enough to get that no one got the better of him.

He was quick, light on his feet, and physically strong. But that wasn’t what made him so dangerous to her. No, it was his sharp intelligence, his quick wit, how he was willing to go as dark as he needed to in order to do what he thought was right.

And then there was the biggie—the way he had of making her feel shockingly alive.

He did as she asked and stepped back but not before pausing to make sure they both knew who was in control here, and it most definitely wasn’t her.

No one did intimidation like Archer, and in his line of work he could be in a coma and still intimidate everyone in the room. He had muscles on top of muscles but didn’t look beefed up like a body builder might. Instead his body seemed lean and seriously badass, with caramel skin that strayed from light to golden to mocha latte depending on what the season was, giving him a look of indeterminable origin.

And sexiness.

It worked for him, allowing him to fit in to just about any situation. Handy on the job, she imagined. But with her he was careful. Distant. And yet she’d seen the way he sometimes looked at her, and on the rare occasion when he’d touched her, like when he guided her through a door with his hand low on her back, he let himself linger. There was always a shocking and baffling yearning beyond both the glances and the touches.

That, or it was all just wishful thinking.

Not that it mattered since he still held back with her. The problem was she yearned too. Yearned for him to see her as a woman, strong and capable enough to stand at his side.

But after what they’d been through, she knew that would never happen. She turned away, annoyed by how her entire body had gone on high alert as always, every inch of her seeming to hum beneath the surface.

She should have just emailed him.
